Grenfell Tower: MPs warn that continuing desktop fire safety tests will ‘put lives at risk’

Last Updated: March 25, 2018By

Inferno: It was desktop testing of supposedly non-flammable materials that led to this.

Didn’t someone say that the definition of madness is repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result?

We know that desktop testing of allegedly fire-retardant materials meant that highly-flammable cladding was used on Grenfell Tower – and contributed greatly to the tragedy there last year.

Now the Tories want to continue doing something they know could cause grievous loss of life, in the expectation that it won’t happen again.

Conclusion:

The Conservative government is mad.

Dozens of MPs have written to the Government to warn that plans to reform fire-safety regulations post-Grenfell will “put lives at risk” by allowing building materials to be approved without undergoing rigorous testing.

In a letter seen by The Independent, nearly 50 MPs from Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party said that a refusal to rule out the use of desktop assessments to determine if cladding and other materials are safe was “unfathomable” and would contribute to a “culture of cost-cutting”.

The letter follows confirmation that ministers are to consult on allowing the continued use of the assessments, despite pledges in the wake of the Grenfell disaster to make safety regulations “as effective as possible”.

Nothing stands in the way of greed. Obviously the industry lobbyists have been out heavily wining ‘n dining the appropriate ministers and bending those flexible ears of MPs hopefully those gullible supporters of business as usual get named for their rash and gullible decisions.

As it is the lives of poorer people that are being put at risk the Tories just don’t care.
