Cheer up, Howard Jacobson: The situation isn’t as bad as you seem to think

Howard Jacobson: Let’s hope he has reason to feel more optimistic soon.

Poor Howard Jacobson. He seems to be labouring under a delusion that anti-Semitism is on the rise, both in the Labour Party and elsewhere. It isn’t.

In fact, all the indications are that the blight of anti-Semitism is in retreat.

That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist in the UK, and nobody who expects to be taken seriously would say so.

And I am encouraged by the headline of his Guardian article:

‘Jews know what antisemitism is and what it isn’t. To invent it would be a sacrilege’

We all know that certain people – whether Jews or not – have been doing exactly that. It is heartening to see a prominent member of that faith standing up and saying that any Jewish people found to have been doing so should be treated as sacrilegious.

I look forward to his denunciation of the so-called charity the Campaign Against Antisemitism, after its false claims about This Writer are finally and decisively proved to be lies (and it won’t be long, now)!

But he certainly seems to have a few strange ideas, summed up in the last paragraph of his piece:

The incantatory repetition of the charge that Jews cry antisemitism only in order to subvert criticism of Israel or discredit Corbyn is more than fatuous and lazy, and it is more than painful to those many Jews who own an old allegiance to the Labour party and who are not strangers to criticising Israel.

Who, exactly, is making this claim? I cannot recall seeing anybody quoted as having done so.

do recall seeing it attributed to others, by the kind of people who are likely to be accused of inventing accusations.

It is the deepest imaginable insult.

Again, I look forward to Mr Jacobson’s denunciation of those among the accusers who are making these claims without any basis. I also stand ready to be corrected if it can be shown that Jeremy Corbyn has said such a thing, or Jennie Formby, or a member of Jewdas (to quote a few prominent possibles).

I cannot speak for all Jews, but a profound depression has taken hold of those I know. For myself, I feel I am back in that lightless swamp of medieval ignorance where the Jew who is the author of all humanity’s ills lies, cheats, cringes and dissembles. And this time there is no horse to punch.

This Writer certainly wouldn’t condone cruelty to animals!

As for the Jew being the author of all humanity’s ills – I don’t think anybody would say that when, for example, Theresa May is the prime minister of the United Kingdom.

But I do think that Mr Jacobson needs to be prepared to let some of his assumptions go, as the extent of the fake anti-Semitism claims becomes clear.

I imagine it will come as a huge relief to him.

I suppose it depends on what passes for anti-semitism. If it’s a matter or harassing or name calling people because they are Jewish, or demonstrating any kind of prejudice towards them, then for me, that is a form of anti-semitism. But I don’t think it is anti-semitic to be critical of some of the Israeli governments treatment of Palestinians or some of their political prisoners any more that it would be anti-American to be critical of Donald Trump. I’m not a fan of Benjamin Netanyahu and I think many liberally minded people in the UK are critical of him, but it would be absurd to saddle them with an accusation of anti-semitism simply to criticise his leadership of Israel.

Does not help we we have Illuminati conspiracies about World Wide Jewish Conspiracy to take over and rule the world and make us all slaves

and that in this is the ridiculous nonsense that Jews are not even real human beings but aliens and invisible shape shitfting Satanic baby sacrificin lixards

People really believe this stuff and regurgitate every day. initelligent educated middle class liberal people.

Jews are stupid, Jews are liars Holocaust is a hoax by Jews, Jews deserved the holocaust. Israel should not exist. Hitler had the right idea. and so it goes on

Prejudice is everyday for those picked out and from those who addictively practice it

Its all rather ridiculus, but it is real and on the rise because of thisIlluminati nonsense. had it a Occupy Jews are alien lizards taking over the city and bankrupting everyone to make us slaves instead of a few wideboys selling bad debt to each other to get the fees until it collapsed, No conspiracy, just greed.

I stand up for my friend who suffers Jew hate including personal physical and verbal attack and pig noises everyday. and is even rejected by professionals shops and businesses blatantly

So it has not gone away and socialists and Labourites practice 5 year old name calling and playground bullying too.

My friend hopes he will be dead soon, he says he has had enough and is ready to go, cannot think of why to stay around.

and in Food Bank and Community Drop In Centre gets followed and punched in toilet and called dirty filthy jew

Staff deny and cover it up.

So it is still there. and thick.

All this vacuous profundity flowing in from all sides about ‘wot’ anti-semitism is or isn’t is truly doing my head in: how can I make it go away? How can I make these people go away? Has the issue of racism suddenly got so complicated in the digital age that I now require daily indoctrination regarding my behavior or is there a simple, straightforward answer to all of this? It’s a modern day version of the ‘witch-hunt’ no less driven by those same old fears that ‘someone is out to get you’! They’ve got to stop being ‘silly-billies’ then!
