Do the people of Barnes, Sunderland, really hate themselves so much they elected someone who hates them too?

Antony Mullen: How many of you saw this image and thought, “He doesn’t look like a racist”?

That’s what it seems.

And the voters of Barnes elected Antony Mullen ahead of Zaf Iqbal – a person Mr Mullen falsely linked with the Manchester bombing, according to this tweet:

Note that Mr Mullen’s membership had been suspended by the Conservative Party – but he was reinstated after winning his election.

It seems odd that the Conservative Party said the tweets were made years ago – I’m pretty sure the Manchester bombing happened only last year.

I’d love to say Mr Mullen’s words didn’t fool anyone – but they fooled 1,560 residents of Barnes ward.

But these people have their feet in the real world:

Perhaps a more pertinent question would be: How the hell has the Conservative Party not been ripped to shreds by the media for supporting racism?

But, of course, we all know the answer to that one.

Right?

A newly-elected Conservative councillor who was suspended after posting a series of “offensive” posts on social media has been elected and reinstated.

Antony Mullen, who now represents the Barnes ward of Sunderland, was suspended at a national level following comments labelled as offensive by Labour and Liberal Democrats.

The Twitter posts included describing his city as a “post-apocalyptic ****hole” and the Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott as a “filthy, bulbous pig”.

The teaching assistant won a majority in Thursday’s elections with 1,560 votes – just 322 more votes than his Labour rival Zaf Iqbal.

Mr Mullen claimed his comments had been taken out of context or “wildly construed to give an unfavourable impression” of him.

A Conservative party statement said the tweets had been made between four and seven years ago while he was a student at Durham University and before he became a Tory member.

The thing with elections you may find the people do not agree with you and agree with your opponent and hold horrendous beliefs

Elections show people do not care about what you care about and think right and vote accordingly.

And you have to know the local politics and intricacies of the local populace.
