No wonder Nando’s didn’t want anything to do with the Tories’ ‘discount’ plan

Last Updated: May 22, 2018By

This is a Nando’s meal. With all due respect to the restaurant chain, can you envision anybody in the Conservative government ever eating there?

Everything about this makes the Tories look bad.

Firstly, notice that they thought they could buy the loyalty of the nation’s youth by offering them cheap deals at a fast-food restaurant. Did it not occur to them to consider how disdainful this would look, considering they enjoy hugely expensive luxury meals at the most exclusive dining spots in the country, if not the world?

Secondly, if Nando’s has any political view, it isn’t Conservative. The company offers its discounts to members of the emergency services and NHS staff – all people the Conservatives have persecuted over the last eight years. Did it not occur to the Tories that trying to offer a discount card in association with such an organisation would lead to … embarrassment?

Finally, I must apologise to the person who originally made this point because not only have I altered it, I have also lost their name. It is a brilliant point, though, and runs as follows:

“How can the government negotiate a Brexit deal with the EU27 when it can’t even negotiate with a fast-food chicken shop?”

Nando’s has distanced itself from suggestions the Conservatives could offer party members a discount at the chain’s restaurants.

The idea was reportedly being considered by Tory chiefs as part of a bid to boost membership numbers.

A “senior party source” was quoted as telling The Times that the prospect of a discount card for money off at restaurants and shops was a “very real possibility”, with its report mentioning Nando’s.

However, Nando’s has poured cold water on suggestions it could link up with the Tories.

A spokesperson told Sky News: “Nando’s has no political affiliations as a brand and no political discount card exists.

“We have a Nando’s loyalty card and standard gift cards that anyone can use, and we offer a 20% discount to Police, Fire Services, Ambulance service and NHS staff.”

If it were not so utterly pathetic it would be a joke. Like the Tories, a nasty joke.

Should the Government really be encouraging young people to eat more junk food?

I didn’t know Nando’s Gaines 20% discount to the heroes of public service ie police, fire ambulance and NHS. Good for them. I’ll pledge to eat there more often to show support for such public spirit.
