Two more councillors suspended from Conservative Party for Islamophobia

Last Updated: June 3, 2018By

Bias in the news agenda can be defeated, it seems – but it takes time.

We’ve been talking about Islamophobia in the Conservative Party, at least since Zac Goldsmith’s disastrously racist campaign to be mayor of London.

But it hasn’t become the burden on the Tories that (fake) anti-Semitism has for the Labour Party.

The reason is simple: Tories and their supporters control the newspapers and TV news outlets (mostly).

Wise politicians would have taken steps to keep it that way.

But we don’t have wise politicians in the modern Conservative Party. We have entitled airheads.

That’s why the issue keeps coming back – they habitually make offensive comments in public, dragging the issue back into the news.

Now, years later – and at least partially in response to the Labour issue, Windrush and other scandals, I’m sure – it seems the Conservative Party will finally receive some scrutiny.

But will it be as thorough as it deserves to be? That is the question.

Just over 24 hours after the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) reiterated its call for an independent inquiry into “Islamophobia in the Tory Party”, another two Conservative Councillors have just been suspended from the party after the emergence of historic alleged anti-Muslim hate.

Linda Freedman, who was elected to the Edgware ward in the most recent local elections and now sits as a Tory Councillor in Barnet, was suspended after tweets emerged showing her expressing support for the detention of Muslims in a response to a Washington Post article.

A second councillor, Stephen Ardley, was suspended following alleged anti-Muslim comments made about Sadiq Khan.
