Hartley-Brewer banned from future Labour conference over ‘safe space’ mockery
Remember how right-wing ratbag Julia Hartley-Brewer invaded the ‘safe space’ at the Labour Party Conference and humiliated its users?
Well, it seems this is one incident over which the Labour Party is able to impose instant justice.
“A radio host has been banned from next year’s Labour conference in a row over a tweet about the party’s “safe space”.
“Julia Hartley-Brewer faced complaints after she posted a five-second video showing herself in the room, inside this year’s conference centre in Liverpool, and saying: “Boo!”
“Her tweet added: “Comrades, if you’re feeling triggered at the Labour Party conference, don’t worry, we’ve found the official #SafeSpace…”
“Ms Hartley-Brewer was accused of mocking people with anxiety disorders and others for whom such rooms are designed.
“Now the media personality says her employers have received an e-mail from the head of Labour’s Conference Arrangements Committee denying her accreditation for next year.”
Serves her right.

As someone with pretty severe anxiety issues and on the autism spectrum, I don’t get out much. And almost certainly never to anything as busy as a political party conference. But if I did… I’d almost certainly be grateful for the presence of a safe space.
As an example of my own experiences with anxiety… I once broke down in tears at a family member’s wedding due to certain family members pestering me, whilst I was stuck in the middle of a loud and busy room. I ended up sat outside for a while before I had to be driven home early. And that was as a legal adult.
The fact that people with Hartley-Brewer’s mindset need to learn is… there are people in the world who have severe problems with panic, anxiety and discomfort and even a small safe space can make a huge difference if there is stress involved (though no doubt some of them fully understand that and just don’t care). To mock this sort of thing is deeply offensive, and it’s a problem that really puts me at odds with people on right, who seem to think the answer is to just “grow up and act like an adult” (if only it was that easy…).
I haven’t seen much of Hartley-Brewer, aside from a few youtube videos where I decided I dislike her political views. But she really takes the biscuit here. To have the stress and panic created by certain atmospheres and situations when combined with a mental illness equated to being “triggered” is horrible. She most certainly deserves the ban she received.
The Labour Party are absolutely right to have acted as they have and done so swiftly. As an autistic person I can attest to the value of such spaces (even if you are not expecting to need to make use of them their mere presence is reassuring just in case).
Absolutely right to ban her, she was only there to cause trouble.
Methinks that she needs to me made aware of what the space was for and maybe to meet some people who have mental health issues. She ought to be deeply sorry even if to her it was just a joke. Anybody can suffer a mental health crisis and should she be unfortunate enough to experience one, she would be grateful for such a space. Perhaps, she might even become a champion for people with mental health issues. Aye, it is fair punishment that she has been banned from next year’s conference but education is the key. Simply banning her will change little, she needs to be brought face to face with that which she was mocking.
