More homeless people found dead while the Tories refuse to record their numbers

Blocked: A police car at cordoned-off Deansgate where one of the bodies was found.

Remember my claim that the Tory idea of ending homelessness is to ensure the death of everybody who sleeps rough?

One way to ensure that there is no outcry against such a policy is to refuse to record those deaths.

We have seen it in the Conservative government’s refusal to record the number of people who have died after being refused sickness and disability benefits.

This is different. Efforts are being made, now, to record the deaths of homeless people – because the Tories can’t hide them away in the same way as those who are entirely in the power of the DWP.

So I agree with Chris Furlong, who tweeted the following with the link to the Manchester Evening News story quoted below:

“As another 2 homeless people die in Manchester centre within hours and the number of homeless dying continues to rise at an increasing pace, Theresa May and her Conservative government refuse to take responsibility.

“Your Shame, Your Policies, Your Fault!”

Two men who died within 24 hours of each other on the streets of [Manchester] city centre this weekend are both believed to have been homeless.

The body of a middle aged man was discovered on Deansgate just before 9am on Saturday, followed by that of a 60-year-old man on Princess Street at 5am the next morning.

The news comes after the Manchester Evening News revealed a string of homeless deaths on the streets of the city – and in temporary accommodation – had been going unrecorded, with little research into how or why they had died.

The [paper] revealed in August just how difficult it is to track or trace the deaths of homeless people on the city’s streets, which are not officially recorded.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham confirmed that the region is now setting up its own system to track and investigate such tragedies.

He also said that from a week on Thursday, 300 extra beds were being made available for rough sleepers across the conurbation as the nights draw in and temperatures drop.
