This charity chief broke the Tory gagging order on the effect of Universal Credit. Her words are heartbreaking – and infuriating

The lady in the video below is Ellie Waugh, chief executive of the charity Humanity Torbay, which aims to help the vulnerable secure homes, jobs and training.

Part of that mission has involved working with the Conservative government – but this has come with strings attached, including a demand not to criticise Tory policies such as Universal Credit on pain of losing grant aid.

Ms Waugh has chosen to speak out despite these threats because she thinks the public needs to know how bad the situation is.

Her statement is clear: “It is absolutely awful out there.”

Anyone who is not heartbroken by her message and infuriated at the Conservative government for making it necessary, and for creating the situation that made it necessary, should seriously consider trying to find their own humanity.

Thank you so much for showing the video and thank you to Ellie for speaking out. Universal Credit must be scrapped. How many charities will have the courage to speak out as Humanity Torbay has. We have tòo get rid of this evil government. You are right Mike it is heartbreaking. In the short term we can support Humanity Torbay. In the long term we need a general election. Homelessness can happen to any of us. How has it come to this. People selling their bodies for food, killing themselves in despair, threatend for speaking out. It has to stop.

Full marks for standing up to these dreadful people! I had no idea about the gagging order. People stayed silent about concentration camps in WWII, of course …

Very brave lady. I agree with every word she said. That this country is being made into a third world, no, a fifth world country, the elite in power make me angry and ashamed. Get rid of the bloody tories and let Corbyn make us a country caring of humanity

Good on you Ellie, that’s a far better way to actually give sustained long term help to everyone, by speaking up with first hand knowledge of the reality
Rather than the shortsighted, short term, limited areas of help and being bound by contract gagging clauses to keep the truth hidden in order to receive govt funding.
There’s a term for that kind of behaviour, ENABLING, ENABLER.
Too many charities have fallen into that role.

Brilliant! Thank you Ellie for outing the Tories Draconian benefits system and the fact that they want it kept quiet because they know how truly horrific the situation has become under their rule!

I wonder what people do when they’ve been to each local food bank three times and have reached their limit [for a year I believe]? We never hear about those unfortunate people. In the Tory interests of saving money what is happening today is an atrocity.

The 3 visit per crisis thing is more of a “guideline” than a rule certainly in the one I help at. We assess each clients needs individually, and if we know that a clients issue is not going to be solved in a short space of time, they can keep coming until it is sorted.

Well done for speaking out about an appalling situation. It is so much easier to follow the herd rather than standing up for what you know to be right.

Thank you to Ellie for SPEAKING OUT. I have been in email contact with my MP with information about Universal Credit that I have heard of – and the answer so far is not good enough. I will persevere with this one. People are being left with no money… That cannot happen.

Am sharing it amongst those I know have an interest
It is very concerning the system itself is attempting to silence her

Won’t be long before they have all of it taken down no doubt because they sure can’t make a constructive argument against anything she has said, the only people that know whats really going on are those suffering from the system and those attempting to help lift those people out of it.

How about a transcript of what she says in the video? Your article’s shareability is limited by not having one, IMO.

  25. kyle a October 24, 2018 at 10:03 pm - Reply

it is not the government at all giving the gagging order per say it is coming from TORBAY council, a tory run shit hole where the council only concern is the tourist £ and not there own people. this council is just as corrupt as the tory government and is happy to allow and partake in a massive fraud on the public purse by one of the main (so-called) social housing associations. but bury any investigation and ignore the info and proof given, funny enough just like the tory MP that covers Brixham (part of torbay) Dr sarah wollaston. the word tory is now associated with fraud and corruption the country over. the poll tax was put down due to public pressure and a odd riot or two, maybe it is time for the same sort of country wide action against both the government and universal credit, before both kill too many more of the poorest citizens

we are all responsible for ourselves ( start following david icke . com ) and we need to take care and be loving and kind and compassionate to one another.
stop looking to any so called authority figures aka psychopath inc and be humane .
I too spent my whole life up to now believing this bs works IT DOESNT!!!
Although this is just the start , so keep your attention on vaccines/ geoengineering/gmo toxic foods/5G emf radiation/robots/AI and on and on.
Look up universal/spiritual law and we will win but you have to stop blaming others and wingeing and moaning cos it don’t work!
    GOOD LUCK HUMANITY.

I certainly agree that we all need to take responsibility for our own political lives.

The rest of it seems like a lot of conspiracy-theory weirdness, though.

I’m really surprised the DWP is not handing out tents and sleeping bags to Universal Credit Applicants at the Job Centres and then deducting the cost of these items from the ‘benefit’ payment. The torys have missed a real business opportunity here: they could’ve made a ‘killing’!

Along with the implementation of Universal Credit is an outpouring of untruths and political ‘clouding of reality’, saying ‘No one will be worse off’ including some adverts on the radio. Often also having to deal with illness and disability, many subject to Universal Credit have now been left considerably worse off and are struggling terribly…and this is only the start of the implementation of Universal Credit in the big cities in the north. Trying to silence the founder of the charity ‘Humanity’ will not work.
This ‘war on the poor’ is a growing river of verbal sewage that has been plugged through successive governments / politicians attributing economic ills to the poorest in society and thus absolving themselves and deflecting any cause and effect that may be attributed to them and their neoliberal ill thought out nonsense.
Another trend plugged through successive governments is a ruthless lack of common sense in the delivering of rules and policy. Politicians living in a bubble of gravy dinners and freebies. Implementation is the order of the day – even if it is counter productive and delivers only negative effects; clerks are made to stick to punitive rules that defy logic and destroy good people’s lives leading to wider array of problems.

I hope that this will be their poll tax..
