Tory Torbay Council excludes charity from homelessness count – for speaking out on Universal Credit?

Remember Humanity Torbay – the charity for homeless and vulnerable people whose boss Ellie Waugh spoke out about the harm and hardship being wrought upon the people of her area by the implementation of the Tories’ cruel and misnamed Universal Credit?

If not, have a quick read of This Site’s previous article on the subject.

Now it seems Conservative-run Torbay Council has cut the charity out of an annual count of homeless people in the area, in spite-fuelled revenge for Ms Waugh’s exposure of the Universal Credit fiasco.

Don’t take my word for it, here’s Ms Waugh herself:

What an excuse for a government!

This organisation is doing hugely valuable work showing the real effect of government policy on the people of the UK. In a sane country, the government would be falling over itself with gratitude.

But the Tories are falling over themselves to penalise Humanity Torbay.

The reason is clear: They don’t want anybody to know that their policies are causing homelessness to proliferate. They want us to think the situation is fine. And they will attack anyone who says otherwise.

Twisted.

If my memory serves me correctly it was a Torbay Tory councillor who, some years ago, bemoaned the passing of Workhouses. Nasty, cruel and vindictive people.

It’s worth bearing in mind a couple of points about the unlamented workhouses.

Firstly, that they were abolished not because they were cruel, inhuman and degrading, but because they were ineffective and expensive to run – which bears comparison with contracted-out “support” from the likes of Working Links, A4e et al.

Secondly, and more pertinently now, the workhouse system didn’t have “sanctions” as we know them. Nobody who entered the workhouse could legally be refused a basic minimum of food and shelter. If they broke the rules they would be taken before a magistrate and, if found guilty, sent to gaol for a month or two – where, of course, they still got that basic minimum of food and shelter. Contrast that to the “modern” benefits system where people can become homeless and utterly destitute on the whim of a faceless DWP bureaucrat, and where even successful claimants receive nothing at all for weeks or months waiting for their claims to be processed!

Now, I’m not by any means calling for a return to workhouses – anyone who thinks that to be a good idea should visit the old workhouse at Southwell in Nottinghamshire that has been preserved by the National Trust. It’s a truly chilling experience, especially for someone like yours truly whose home village was in Southwell Union under that abominable system – but have we really made any progress in nearly two centuries?

yeap this is the reason tory has to go, hopefullly the opposition in Torbay will remind everyone of this I am sure this charity will, also national lottery sending two thugs to tell this charity to be nice to tory and don’t say anything bad against them has saved me a fortune, I stopped buying national lottery tickets and that will stay in place until you double fund this charity and Camelot does not have the contract anymore
