Why has the number of letters of ‘no confidence’ in Theresa May apparently FALLEN?

Theresa May: A confidence vote from her backbenchers is the least of her worries. Her alliance with the DUP is falling apart and she no longer has the ability to pass legislation. Her government is a lame duck.

What the blazes is going on in the Conservative Party?

We have been told – for months now – that disgruntled Conservative backbenchers have been sending letters demanding a vote of ‘no confidence’ in Theresa May to the chairman of their 1922 Committee, Graham Brady, and that a vote against her would be triggered if her received 48 such letters.

All the indications were that more than 40 such letters had arrived by the middle of last week, when Jacob Rees-Mogg put his own letter in and appealed for others to do so.

But today the headlines are full of the failure to reach the required number and the humiliation of the Brexiteers of the Tory European Research Group (ERG) that wanted it.

And while Nadine Dorris on the BBC’s Politics Live thinks 46 letters have been submitted, other reports suggest only 24 are in Mr Brady’s possession.

What’s going on? Why are we hearing that the number of ‘no confidence’ letters has fallen?

The ‘coup’ has failed. I don’t credit these people with much foresight regarding consequences so it wouldn’t surprise me if the reality of a ‘no confidence’ vote had not occurred to them.

It looks like JRM and the ERG lot have been had for the fools they so self evidently are.

They all got over excited and came too soon.

I suspect that the cowardly Tories are more interested in their own survival than they are in bringing down May. I also suspect her downfall, and hopefully the downfall of the Tory government will come from the north of the Island of Ireland.

If the only one who knows the people who sent in the letters is the person in charge of the 1922 committee then only he can say how many MP’s have filed a vote of no confidence in Theresa May, the other way is they make their name public that they have filed a letter of no confidence in her.
If the numbers have gone down then it can only be the MP withdrawing the letter after May or her supporters have blackmailed them into withdrawing the letter.
If the latter is occurring then there is a mole in that committee leaking info to the PM and they should be sacked.

Letters can be withdrawn, and rumours abounded several weeks ago that letters had been sent, with the intention to pad the numbers up, so as to ‘flush out’ backbenchers who were not on side. And that those letters would then be withdrawn if close to 48 letters overall were received.

As Sir Graham Brady said on the Andrew Marr programme only he knows how many letters, if any, have been submitted and as is customary that remains confidential to him…everything else is pur speculation.
