Tories have increased homelessness by 13,000, after 449 people died. Achievement?

Not funny: A homeless person rests next to street art of Theresa May as the Joker.

Let’s get this straight: The Conservative Party said it would halve homelessness by 2022, and eliminate it altogether by 2027.

They managed to eliminate 449 people over the last year, due to their policies – encouraging people like This Writer to suggest that they were trying to kill off the homeless.

But now it seems that the total number of homeless people has increased by 13,000 – nearly 29 times as many people as the number who died.*

What are we to conclude from this?

That the plan to end homelessness by 2027 doesn’t exist?

That the Tories are actually driving more people out of their homes?

And that they will then happily leave those people to die on the streets, rather than helping them back under a roof?

That seems to be the message.

One person in Parliament is upset about this, at least:

*Remember, there are different levels of homelessness so, while 320,000 people are now defined as being without a home, it has been suggested that the number of people sleeping rough is between 4,000 and 5,000. The 449 deaths come from the latter group.

I was talking to a young man the other day who is living under a railway bridge on edge of town, all his belongings piled up beneath tarpaulin sheets, sleeps on an old mattress in what is a cold, damp, draughty place, says he’s been Sanctioned for 2 years and has now dropped out of the Benefits system altogether, which of course is what the Tories want.
