Actress who plays psychic superhero shreds Piers Morgan over mental health comments

Role: As the psychic Phoenix, Sophie Turner plays a character whose mentality is unique.

This actor is to be praised for turning the tables on Establishment bully Piers Morgan over mental health problems.

Issues of this kind will never be “fashionable”, as the ignorant Morgan tried to claim.

Under the current Conservative government, they are not even acknowledged. Mental ill-health is not considered a good enough reason to receive long-term sickness or disability benefits and does not count towards any such award, despite the fact that benefit assessors ask about it.

People with a mental health issue are, more often than not, told they are faking it. What’s fashionable about that?

I’m lucky; I’m not among the quarter of the UK population that has mental ill-health. But I know plenty of people who are. They are a significant proportion of the population, after all.

But Mr Morgan wants us to think as little of it as possible, and tries to brand those raising the profile of mental health as attention-seekers.

Sophie Turner may be best-known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, but she is also currently playing the psychic Jean Grey in the X-Men film franchise – a character with unique mental health issues.

And she seems pretty clued-up about it in her personal life, too.

So I, for one, welcome the fact that she called an overbearing establishment ass a rude name. In fact, her language was probably too mild.

Sophie Turner has criticised Piers Morgan over an article he shared about celebrities speaking out about their mental health, calling the presenter a “t***”.

The Game of Thrones actor, who is known for playing Sansa Stark in the hit TV show, called out Morgan after he reposted an article in which Coronation Street star Beverley Callard said she was concerned celebrities were trying to make mental health “fashionable”.

Sharing the piece on Twitter, Morgan wrote: “She’ll be hammered for saying this, but 100% true”.

In response, Turner shut down the 53-year-old, writing: “Or maybe they have a platform to speak out about it and help get rid of the stigma of mental illness which affects 1 in 4 people in UK per year.

“But please go ahead and shun them back into silence. T***.”
