Why are the Tories touting Boris Johnson as the likely future leader of the United Kingdom when he can’t even show enough good character to follow the rules of Parliament?

There is no way this man should be allowed anywhere near the mechanisms of law-making, let alone given an opportunity to mess around with international law.

His latest transgression is a failure to declare ownership of a 20 per cent share in a house in Somerset within the required time after acquiring it.

That may seem a small breach of the rules, but there seems to be something more sinister behind it. The Commons standards committee rejected Mr Johnson’s claim that he had not understood the rules as this offence followed a previous failure to declare a financial interest.

Last year, Mr Johnson was also found to have broken rules that prevent former cabinet ministers taking up new jobs for three months after leaving office, by signing up to write a £275,000-a-year column in the Daily Telegraph.

The committee’s ruling stated that he showed “an over-casual interest towards obeying the rules of the House”.

It added: “The committee found it particularly regrettable that Mr Johnson gave the commissioner an assurance that his registration of interests was up to date, and within a very short period it proved not to be.”

His punishment is to receive a lecture on his responsibilities – to which he probably won’t listen, even if he bothers to attend. Any further breaches may call for “more serious action”, the committee stated.

The incident shows a flagrant disregard for rules which make Mr Johnson entirely unsuitable for any position of responsibility at all – yet the Conservatives are suggesting that this clown could be the UK’s next prime minister.

And let’s not forget his casual sexism and racism – including his attack on Muslim women’s dress sense.

No. This country is already a laughing-stock. It is time for serious, steady leadership – not an irresponsible jackass.
