Brexit talks are stalling because May wants to sell the NHS to Donald Trump

Theresa May and Donald Trump: That’s not what he really wants to get his hands on!

What’s left of it, anyway.

Jeremy Corbyn has said Brexit talks with the Conservative government are stalling because the Tories want deregulation, partly to ensure a US trade deal.

Deregulation, for those of you who aren’t in the know, means a lowering of standards – in this case to allow American firms to trade their lower-quality goods with the UK – chlorine-washed chicken being the most-quoted example.

It would allow the Tory government to sell off the remains of the National Health Service to American profit-making interests.

And it would also allow the Tories to set up the UK as a tax haven, right on the EU’s doorstep.

Environmental responsibilities and workers’ rights would also be sacrificed in Mrs May’s march to Donald Trump’s drumbeat.

Mr Corbyn won’t accept any of it. He’s standing up for you – to give you a fighting chance to maintain our current rights as a bare minimum of what we can expect in the future, to retain current high consumer standards, to make sure that the super-rich pay their taxes, and to stop the Tories plunging us into an expensive and harmful US-style health system.

Every single citizen of the UK should support him in that, for an obvious reason.

Brexit represents the desire to stop giving away our assets to foreign countries and companies, but that is precisely what Mrs May is trying to do.

AFTERWORD: Some might say Mrs May is neglecting a deal better-suited to Donald Trump:

As I understand it, the key WTO rule is about ‘equivalence’. This means that the key regulations for (human) food standards for two different countries, may “be deemed as equivalent” to one another even if they differ in important detail as a result of trade negotiations. Goods satisfying the regs of the country of origin may then be freely traded with the importer as if they were produced to the same standard.

Thus US chlorinated chicken becomes the same as bug free EU chicken, growth hormones and antibiotics may be used in US meat but are banned from EU meat, US flour can contain mouse hairs, but EU flour can’t, and so on for several hundred quality regulations.

I can’t imagine Liam Fox winning the argument that we should keep EU food standards with President Trump, who has been in consultation with the US agric lobby. US ambassador recently plugged the idea of equivalence on R4Today programme.

This potentially leads to the UK becoming a third rate country for everything we eat.

Another valid arguement is that a form of the TTIP which was rejected by Europe would be created.
USA companies would be able to sue if they can’t sell their “tat” here.

Trump once complained about Germans not buying USA vehicles -the reply was “Build Better Cars” which is exactly what we shoild be saying.

Tories are good at inventing euphemisms for privatisation of our public services, so that they and their unscrupulous chums can profit handsomely at public expense. Thank you to Jeremy Corbyn for spelling out this latest Nasty Party euphemism for privatising our NHS.

Some good points are being made here. Leaving the EU will NOT somehow free the UK from having to comply with other peoples regulations, unless the UK wants to stop all import and export of any goods at all. The difference would be that WTO rules already exist and the UK has little say in them. And the UK, after Brexit, will be in a weak position and will have to scrabble around for whatever trade deal is on offer.
And none of this will be quick and easy. Lord Eric Pickles, the Tories professional Yorkshireman, recently described the current Brexit negociations as “just the foothills” with the main effort ” climbing Mount Kilimanjaro” still to come.Yet, I fear that many who call for an immediate “No Deal” Brexit somehow think that it will all be over if the UK “just leaves!” We have got years of this to come, and no prospect of a favourable outcome.

Labour would not be able to introduce any national economic plan, would not be able to control capital movements or to introduce export and import controls, to take measures to control the cost of living or increase taxes against the rich, pursue a policy of regional economic development with subsidies or other state means; in short,to control the main lines of the country’s economic policy.
If we stay with his plan and adhere to EU rules.
