Labour MPs betray their party, asking Corbyn not to jeopardise Brexit deal with referendum demand

Right-wing Labour MPs including Stephen Kinnock, Gloria de Piero and around 38 others are calling for Jeremy Corbyn not to “torpedo” Brexit talks by insisting on a second referendum.

The demand contradicts Labour Party policy as agreed at the party’s conference last year and is certain to infuriate grassroots members if the leader accepts it.

This Writer questions the reasons for the demand.

Is it an attempt to make Theresa May’s version of Brexit more likely? That would be one in which the UK becomes a tax haven on the edge of the EU, with no workers’ rights, no environmental protections, a privatised health service owned by US companies and chlorinated chicken for our meals.

Is it an attempt by right-wingers to sabotage Labour’s chances in the forthcoming elections? The party is putting forward candidates in the European and local elections and a U-turn on Brexit policy would certainly harm the high poll ratings Labour is currently enjoying.

The party’s right-wing MPs have a nearly-four-year history of attacking Mr Corbyn; they seem to consider the creation of a party that works for the good of the whole nation to be a personal affront to their own selfish career ambitions.

A second referendum, without the barefaced lies of Johnson, Gove, Davis, Duncan-Smith and, of course the loathsome man-frog Farage; not to mention the cheating and fraud, is the obvious answer. Why are the leavers so set against it?

Talking about MEP Labour Candidates; only one so far appears to be a Socialst and JC’s had to fight to get her on the Ballot. Momentum’s candidate who’s a right winger Remainer, has been pushed downt the list. There are almost NO Socialists running as MEP’s for Labour; Lord Adonis et al. Adonis on radio just said he doens’t want Leavers (Socialists) voting for ‘his’ Party. https://twitter.com/Michael_Heaver/status/1119222798285791232

I’m a remainer and a strong supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, so that’s ok then.

As a ‘Labour beLeaver’ I, along with thousands of other Labour members and supporters who want a clean honest-to-goodness Brexit, believe Labour should be unequivocal about Labour’s promise to deliver Brexit to the British people. Even with Remain arguments that has called ‘foul’ at the Brexit result the democratic process that brought about unprecedented numbers of the electorate that voted Brexit must see the Leave referendum result properly adhered to. Anything else will see trust in the democratic process where Labour is concerned is likely to be seriously damaged. Right now we see The Brexit Party taking potential votes from all of UK’s political parties including support away from Labour if Labour is seen to exhibit itself more a Remain party like the LibDems, Greens, SNP and the party of former Labour and Tory pal’s that is the new ‘Change UK’ party. Contrary to so many in Labour the Labour Party is not a Remain Party.
