Don’t believe the spin – the local elections were NOT all about Brexit
Why should Brexit be the dominant factor in the election of people who won’t have anything to do with it?
And why should anybody think the result has any bearing on that matter?
Just at the moment I’m hearing Remainers saying it must be about a swing towards staying in the EU because the main Brexit-supporting parties lost 1,561 councillors in the English council areas affected, and Leavers saying it must be about Leaving because Brexit-supporting parties still have 5,585 councillors in those places – the vast majority.
The others – including Independents who may very well be former UKIP members disillusioned with that party’s swing to the far-right – totalled 2,825. That’s about half of the main parties’ total.
Notice also that the mainstream media commentators are reluctant to talk about how these results relate to the way people voted in the 2016 EU referendum. Is there any correlation at all between so-called ‘Remain’ constituencies and the way electors voted on May 2?
How many councillors – for any party – stayed in place because voters in their wards traditionally support one party over the others?
How many were voted in because of local issues like the fact that the Tories are cutting £1.3 billion from local authority budgets?
Did the Liberal Democrats enjoy a bounce because voters who abandoned them in 2015, due to their complicity with the Conservatives at Westminster, had decided they had suffered enough and shifted their vote back?
Taken as a whole, one thing is clear:
Only a fool would relate the local election result to a single issue like Brexit. Among the mainstream media commentators, the only reason for doing so would be to mislead.

In my opinion they were about all the nasty and failed Tory policies, including Cameron’s reckless and disgraceful decision to embroil the whole country into the Tory Party’s insoluble feud about Europe.
The same fools who said 80% voted at the General Election for pro-Brexit parties are spinning this one to say that the people want them to ‘get on with Brexit’.
The issue in common here IS a single one across the main parties. It is the fact that, in their own heartlands, the party faithful of Labour (somewhat) and Tory for sure are absolutely sick of their infighting and lack of action on Brexit OR anything else for that matter.
With the Tories taking such a spanking Labour should easily have picked up another hundred seats minimum, but yet they managed to lose almost that much as well!
Both parties have failed the public on Brexit. If you accept the referendum result, whichever way you voted (and the vast majority DO accept the result) then it should have been implemented by now.
The fact that it hasn’t was down to May’s decision to hold a snap election thus losing a 100 seat majority and now depending upon DUP terrorist sympathisers. DUP won’t be happy until there’s barbed wire on the NI border again – unlike the people who voted them in!
Having lost her majority she is unable to get ANY kind of deal across the line without Labour’s help. And Labour are wary of agreeing anything, even if she offered Labour what it, allegedly, wants they’d refuse it. What Labour REALLY wants is for the Tories to do it on their own so they can point at the resultant mess and blame Tory Brexit Chaos with the hope of a few extra seats at the next GE.
Meanwhile we are going thru the motions of an EU election and no further towards a solution. People and businesses are suffering because MPs don’t want to compromise. Essentially they don’t like being told what to do, and the referendum DID tell them what to do.
Leaving the EU will hurt us, but messing around with years of uncertainty will hurt EVEN MORE…
