Labour backlash against cross-party Brexit deal shows up media lies about local elections
So much for all the claims about Labour and the Tories being forced towards a Brexit deal by their joint losses at the local elections.
Theresa May was quick enough to plead for a quick deal – perhaps mindful of the reputed 82 per cent of Conservative Party members who want her to quit on the spot.
Jeremy Corbyn, on the other hand, was less forthcoming, while his lieutenants have made it clear they’re not interested in a quick deal – possibly because of this:
Ms May was also accused of refusing to shift ground on a customs union and of risking the NHS going “up for sale”.
It seems Mrs May had supported a customs union – but only on a temporary basis. Labour won’t have it.
And according to Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth, if a customs union is temporary, private health companies from the United States could still take control of NHS contracts. Labour won’t have that either.
Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said:
“She’s jeopardised the negotiations for her own personal protection,” he said, adding: “We’re dealing with a very unstable government.
“It’s [like] trying to enter into a contract with a company that’s going into administration and the people who are going to take over are not willing to fulfil that contract. We can’t negotiate like that.”
Labour claimed that details of the talks had been briefed to Tory newspapers to give the impression an agreement was only days away.
A Conservative source told The Independent the party was “optimistic” of a quick conclusion, saying: “Tuesday will be the time when we know the likelihood of a possible deal.”
Strikingly, a senior Labour source denied the resumption of cross-party talks on Tuesday would be a make-or-break moment, even as the Tories insisted it would.
I get the impression we won’t witness the announcement of a deal on Tuesday.
That’s the same day 1922 Committee chairman Graham Brady will meet Mrs May to demand that she set a date for the end of her term as prime minister – or face a change in party rules that could force her out.
What will she do?

I really don’t think any deal with the Tories would be wise. These nasty people are good at shifting blame and reneging on promises. May is a thoroughly dishonest and corrupt politician – as are all her equally odious cronies.

Any kind of deal with the tories? No way. Remember the way they took Nick Clegg to the cleaners, sucked them dry and threw them out. The tories always do this.
