If roasted crickets are the world’s new food source, who’ll be eating all the steak?

Marketed as a fashion choice: Sweet chilli and lime-flavoured crickets will join Abokado’s customisable range of toppings.

I’m reminded of a line in an old science fiction movie about some poor-person’s-excuse-for-food being “good for the environment, and okay for you”.

At long last, locusts are being fed to the masses as an alternative to meat, on the pretext that our current eating habits are harming the eco-system.

We’re all expected to change our ways and eat bugs.

Can you guess who won’t?

I’ll give you a clue: Don’t expect to see locust on the menu at the big Tory Black and White Ball any time soon.

Roasted crickets are to go on sale this week at outlets of a London snack brand – the first time in the UK edible insects will appear on the regular daily menu at a takeaway food chain.

The crunchy whole crickets, from Eat Grub, will be available in Abokado shops across London from Tuesday as part of the chain’s new spring menu. The sweet chilli and lime-flavoured snack will join its customisable range of toppings for fresh salads, poke bowls and hotpots, and also be available as bagged snacks alongside nuts, edamame and popcorn.

Environmental experts have long recommended insects as a sustainable food source that could help cut food poverty and reduce the damaging impact of meat production. Insects are also nutritious, containing essential proteins, fats, minerals and amino acids.

Erm, with a 75% average decrease in insect populations since 1970, should we be eating any of them? Apart from locusts, there seem to be plenty of them:

It won’t be long before Harry and Meghan are serving locusts instead of canapes. And the Duchy farms will produce a posh organic version at twice the price.

I don’t understand these food fads. Once upon a time, oysters were the food of the poor. There are plenty of people in the world who eat locusts and plenty who don’t. Meat isn’t harming our environment, its mass productions is, which is a direct consequence of this nasty Capitalism that has been abound for decades. Everything is produced to excess, in order to make money; it has nothing to do with feeding people. A staggering quantity of all the food that it produced goes to machines! Why does everything now contain palm oil? Since when did Westerners consume palm oil? Palm oil is not meat yet its production, for the West, is doing as much harm as is mass meat production.
There are plenty of people in the world without enough to eat, plenty who eat what they need and more than plenty who eat far more than is necessary. We don’t need to eat bugs, especially when they are facing problems of their own, we just need to take from the cupboard what we need and what it can provide; this thing called moderation. Cities are bad, because very little food production occurs there and their inhabitants become disconnected from the land that sustains them; I say cities, when what we have is an increasing number of sprawling conurbations.
Back to meat; we waste much of it. If we ate more of it, we wouldn’t need to produce as much but offal is unfashionable and people don’t want noses, lips, or ears in their sausages and burgers but they won’t mind eating a cow’s backside. You’ll be hard pressed to find giblets in your chicken and how many people prepare their chickens, before they cook them? We don’t even get the feet. Why do cauliflowers have the leaves removed? Cauliflower leaves are delicious!
We don’t need another food fad, under the guise of saving the planet which doesn’t give a poop about us, we just need to eat what we already produce. Food waste is a crime, especially meat and fish. If an animal (or plant) dies for you, the very least that you should do is give it the respect of eating it. We, in the West, certainly don’t need to start consuming other life forms!

You are what you eat. It’s a Satanic plot to de-humanize Mankind. Vegetarianism / Veganism is the way forward. Meat is murder and increases global suffering whilst making people more Bestial. Eating insects is also unjust and will create a hive mentality.

They have been selling them at Morrison’s for about 18 months now. So someone is eating them. Not me I hasten to add I like my crunchy stuff to me vegetable in origin and covered in Wasabi and ginger

I can see it now, barrels full of different kinds of freeze dried critters in the food banks while politicians pose for the cameras . . . & dear Rees-Mogg “what, a jolly good idea, spiffing”
