We should ALL ‘fight with every breath’ to keep our NHS safe from Donald Trump
Fighting with every breath: Jeremy Corbyn speaks out in support of the NHS after hearing that Donald Trump wants to get his hands on it.
I know people who are alive today as a result of NHS treatment. I know people who have undergone life-changing surgery that was only possible because the cost of our health service is shared by us all.
One such person recently told me that, if they had been forced to undergo their surgery under a US-style system, they would have been charged no less than £100,000.
It would have put them in poverty for the rest of their life. The average UK wage for ordinary working people is less than £15,000 per year; there simply would not have been enough to support normal living expenses and repayments of medical costs.
Insurance? Some of the firms – such as Unum, the criminal US corporation that has advised the DWP on ways to make state benefits inaccessible for millions – actively seek reasons not to pay out when the money is needed.
My friend told me that the surgery would not have been affordable and they would have had to go on suffering for the rest of their life – however long or short it may have been as a result.
This is why it is vital that the United Kingdom ends up with a national leader we can trust not to sell off the NHS. And I’m afraid that none of the Conservative leadership candidates makes the grade.
Would you put your life in the hands of Boris Johnson or Sajid Javid? Millions have already been at Esther McVey’s mercy – to their cost. Could you trust Rory Stewart, who preaches love but has a voting record full of hate?
Jeremy Hunt – a man who personally ran the NHS into the ground and sold off huge amounts of it to private corporations already?
Michael Gove?
Any of the others?
I would not.
And if you rely on the NHS, you would be insane to trust any of them too.
Your problem is that the 100,000 or so blue-rinsed grannies who now form the membership of the Tory Party are unlikely to be in the same position as you and are far more likely to want a fat tax rebate (even though, at their time of life, it’s hard to understand why they would want it).
I am reminded of a tweet from a self-declared “centrist dad”, looking for a reason to support the new socialism. Why should he?
My knee-jerk response would have been to ask how selfish he was feeling. If he only wanted to look after Number One, then socialism wouldn’t be for him.
But if enough people feel the same way, he’ll lose his National Health Service – and he’ll regret that because he’s bound to need it one day!
So when it comes to choosing the next leader of our once-great nation – looking at the list of Tories available, the correct answer can only be: None of the above.
We need a general election and we need a Labour government led by Jeremy Corbyn – before it’s too late.
Jeremy Corbyn says he will ‘fight with every last breath’ to save the NHS from the clutches of US healthcare firms.
He issued the warning to Donald Trump in a speech to protesters raging against the state visit of the US President.
He said: “We’re in the midst of a debate about the future of the relationship between Britain and Europe and the rest of the world.
“But it should not be a debate about how we go forward with no deal at the same time as offering up our precious, wonderful National Health Service to private American companies to come in and take it over.
“We will not stand for that. We will fight with every last breath of our body to defend the principle of a healthcare system free at the point of need for everybody as a human right.”

Both the Conservatives and Labour governments past and present have sold off chunks of our public services already. What is going to happen in the future when there is nothing left to flog off?
I saw Trump’s speech in which he said it was all up for grabs, a promise and threat all in one sentence.
It’s the one thing that unites most sensible people, however they vote.
The thin end of the wedge has already been inserted in the way that Hunt, and his predecessors (even in Blair’s govt) have privatised, had self governing trusts and made ‘the bottom line’ the ACTUAL bottom line instead of the service that is provided to us who use it.
The ONE, and possibly ONLY advantage of Brexit is that ANY contract put out to tender does NOT have to comply with EU rules. We CAN say that we will not accept foreign bids for NHS services if we are not in the EU. We CAN specify that ONLY UK based companies can bid.
Any services SHOULD be in house and nurses should be trained AND EDUCATED in house (this would END the nurse shortage nigh on overnight)
But the Tories have been paving the way, after Tony Blair opened the door, for this for years now. Now they can simply blame Trump and say we HAD to do this. They can blame Trump and the US in the way they used to blame the EU for their own shortcomings. Shortcomings which countries like Germany DIDN’T seem to have (not talking about NHS here – German system is nothing like as good as ours)
Those who voted for Brexit need to be reminded that the politicians who espoused support for it DID NOT have the same ends in mind as they did. They were looking to line their pockets with fat American deals for things that simply wouldn’t be allowed currently. We narrowly avoided TTIP only for Trump’s deal to end up being worse for us?
My only hope is that, due to living in Scotland, our NHS may be a little safer in that it is not run directly by the Tories and would require the SNP to sell us out – which seems EXTREMELY unlikely…
