Will you still vote for the Brexit Party once you know what it supports?

Fair comment: A TV signer shows what may happen to the nation if the Brexit Party gains a foothold in the UK’s Parliament.

This was something of a ‘Mission: Impossible’ for Yr Obdt Srvt.

The Brexit Party is threatening to stand a candidate in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election. The Liberal Democrats are already using it as a bogeyman with which to threaten genuinely left-wing voters into supporting them rather than Labour, and the Tories are considering an alliance with it while fielding lame-duck shamed expenses-cheat Chris Davies as their own candidate.

But what are the Brexit Party’s policies?

Nobody knows for sure because it has never published a manifesto. Check out the organisation’s official website if you don’t believe me.

Instead, I tracked down a few leaflets from the Peterborough by-election. They didn’t help.

These documents seem to follow a set pattern, with a banner headline saying that the organisation is “Changing politics for good” or exhorting voters to help them do the same.

There’s an editorial by Nigel Farage, stating: “In June 2016, 17.4m voted to leave the EU – the biggest democratic mandate in British history. After 25 years of campaigning for Brexit, I believed we had won. Yet almost three years later, the government and MPs have betrayed Brexit.

“However you voted in 2016, we all care about democracy and dislike seeing our great nation humiliated. This battle is no longer just about the EU. We must fight back against our failing MPs who have defied 17.4m of us. Their two-party system cannot cope with Brexit. Politics is broken. Enough is enough.

“We need to change politics for good. Let’s put the principles of Trust, Honesty and Integrity at the heart of our democracy. This is about more than Brexit. It’s about what kind of country we are.”

Flannel.

Aggressive flannel, too, when you consider the claims that we are “seeing our great nation humiliated”, and must “fight” “this battle”. What battle?

If it’s a war of words Mr Farage wants, then he needs to put these into policies – otherwise we’ll draw our own conclusions from other things he has said.

Things like: “We need to move to an insurance-based system of healthcare.” Led By Donkeys, the campaigners who put politicians’ comments on huge street posters and then post them on Twitter, has publicised this well-known comment:

So the Brexit Party is opposed to the National Health Service, it seems.

Mr Farage also opposes motherhood, to judge from this comment: “The European Parliament, in their foolishness, have voted for increased maternity pay,” and this one: “It isn’t too difficult to breastfeed a baby in a way that’s not openly ostentatious… perhaps sit in a corner.”

So it seems the Brexit Party is opposed to, well, women.

Here are the Led By Donkeys posters:

Given this wealth of publicly-known information, it would have been prudent to provide us with some policy information on the leaflet. Instead, we got quotes from Mr Farage’s cronies.

“I do deals for a living. Taking ‘no deal’ off the table is bonkers,” is the quote from Ben Habib, property developer and Brexit Party MEP for London since last month.

Does that appear reasonable? It seems, though, that he also said this: “In a No Deal Brexit] the property market in the UK would slow down dramatically… we’d be looking to pick off weakness in the market and get some interesting deals,” and this: “The pound would fall in value… our [company] income streams would go up in value. So we’re quids in on that front.”

From a property developer, it seems he may have a personal stake in a ‘no deal’ Brexit that overrides his interest in the public good – wouldn’t you agree?

Poster campaigners Led by Donkeys would:

So it seems the Brexit Party supports economic change – that makes its members rich. Everyone else can go to the dogs, apparently.

Therefore, if you are a rich industrialist, it might – might – be worth voting for the Brexit Party. There aren’t many of those in Brecon and Radnorshire, I fear!

On the other hand, if you are female, or rely on the National Health Service for your medical needs, you should avoid the Brexit Party like the Plague. I have a feeling there may be significantly more such people in Brecon and Radnorshire.

That’s the available evidence. Now find a Brexit Party supporter and see what happens when you show it to them.

“Now find a Brexit Party supporter and see what happens when you show it to them.” I’d have to find one, first!

Not sure whether I agree with you on the subject of the Brexit Party, genuinely not sure.

Their success has been that they separated themselves away from UKIP which had become a straight up party of racism since their association with Tommy Robinson, electoral suicide. But what made them eminently supportable by voters of all political colours was the fact that they had NO policy save for that of advocating for Brexit to happen timeously. UKIP’s policies were further to the right than the Tories, so lifelong Labour voters who had voted for Brexit felt unable to support them, this ‘single-issue’ party style for the council and EU elections really worked for them.

Farage has stated in interviews that they are “working on” policies for the next GE. In one way that sounds good, but in reality it will kill support for the party. Lifelong voters (for Labour in particular) won’t be able to stomach voting for a party that’s more Tory than the Tories. This will, of course benefit Labour, provided that Labour doesn’t shift it’s stance on Brexit meantime. Any gain made by going full on ‘second referendum’ will be lost by doing so, some voters may decide to hold their noses after all. Their current stance respects the vote, the voters and equally please/displeases everyone and allows their core vote (members) and lifelong voters to stick with them. A major shift in policy will result in a SECOND loss of votes, I don’t see their potential action winning back votes from the LibDems. Of course council and EU votes are different, and less likely to be tactical (yes, LABOUR votes ARE tactical, the LibDems don’t win and only Labour will keep the Tories out and the electorate know it – look at Scotand when it became apparent that SNP could win, Labour lost it’s heartland it had held for over 50 years!)

But, on another point – depending on who you listen to, Greenpeace were behind the ‘Led By Donkeys’ campaign and as a charity are actually operating illegally in intervening in political campaigning during an election period – “Gagging Law” I don’t subscribe to any of this, but it is out there. I’m glad they intervened though, it’s good to know what the candidates have actually said. Farage’s statement in particular in utterly ridiculous, ‘move to an insurance based health care’?? THAT’S precisely what we already have!! That is entirely the point of ‘National Insurance’ The clue’s in the name, Nigel!

So, it appears that the Brexit Party is doomed as soon as it declares it’s policies, although if they’re anything like the other parties they’ll release their manifestos two days before the election and remain tight lipped about details whilst telling everyone what they want to hear. The Tories will doom themselves with floating voters by electing Boris, doom themselves with pro European Tories for the same reason but ALSO doom themselves with ERG and other Brexiteers for the SAME REASON as Boris will not be able to carry out his aim of achieving Brexit, by October or otherwise. The anti Semitism smears against Corbyn will drag on and on, losing yet more Labour votes. And whilst I believe that right wingers are doing this, I believe they are not alone. Many in the Blairite wing of Labour are deliberately involving themselves in this too. The beneficiaries of this will be the LibDems and SNP. the result, a hung parliament and probably a minority government for Labour. No coalition, no confidence and supply either. Labour will refuse to work with the SNP on principal, as usual, and potentially let the Tories in to have a minority govt and LibDems may well refuse to have an arrangement with Labour or even vice versa over either Brexit for the LibDems or the actions of the coalition for Labour. On principal the LibDems will ALSO refuse to work with SNP. It’s a shame really, A Labour/SNP arrangement would see backing for what many would see as Labour core beliefs, as implemented in Scotland by their SNP government.

Labour won’t start getting support again until it believes in itself. It needs to divest itself of those who are so right wing they could be Tory Wets. Chuka Umuna at least had the decency to leave, hopefully Tom Watson will stop damaging the party and leave too. Corbyn is referred to as a ‘Marxist’ by the far right and even right wing, he’s far from it, he is a true Labour moderate. Only when Blair dragged Labour to being nearly Tory did Labour lose it’s founding principals, Corbyn, at least, has principals…

What is worrying is that so many people are prepared to vote for a political company (not party), which has no manifesto.

  4. Chris Lovett

Well, when our genuinely left-wing party OPENLY opposes brexsh*t I’ll be able to vote for them again. Until then, I’m with the b*ll*cks to brexit party.

If a former Investment Banker can successfully market himself as a “Man of the people” there has to be a whole lot of manipulation involved surely ?

Normally I don’t allow sweary comments on the site but this clearly speaks for itself.

Garage is wise to wait for a real GE to reveal his manifesto. He will deliver it given the chance. Unlike the lying bar stewards in the 3 main parties. Lib/Lab/Con men.

smear smear smear youre a disgrace on the EU gravytrain. The EUs amassed 32TRILLION of debt in its short history, the worst economic crash since the 1920s is about to hit the EU with unsustainable debt repayments for the next 70, yes 70, years. If youre RICH the EU is for you. If youre working class, or a small business only an absolute tool would vote any remain party.
Democracy is simple, either youre democratic or you arnt. The peoples vote was decided in 2016. Now respect the result deliver the referendum promise

What is worrying is that billionaires support or own publications like Vox which seek to radically subvert voting outcomes it doesnt like. Anti-Democracy by any means is not attractive- it is selfish. Those posters are/were ineffective. Signed, Brexit supporter

Do you mean Vox.com – which is nothing to do with This Site?

Sadly, Vox Political is not owned or supported by billionaires, nor does it seek to subvert voting outcomes. Anti-democracy isn’t attractive, which is why voters deserve to have as much information available to them as possible. I can understand why the Brexit Party and its supporters would oppose that.
