MPs have supported bid to block Parliament suspension to allow ‘no-deal’ Brexit

This result shows how wrong Yr Obdt Srvt can be.

I predicted a close vote earlier today (July 18) and the result was anything but close.

MPs voted by a majority of 41 to stop the suspension of Parliament between October 9 and December 18.

The catch is that it would be possible if a new executive is formed in Northern Ireland’s devolved assembly.

The government had opposed the amendment but four cabinet ministers abstained – Greg Clark, David Gauke, Philip Hammond and Rory Stewart.

And 17 Conservatives voted to support it, including now-former minister for digital and the creative industries Margot James, who resigned in order to do so.

Apparently a spokesperson for departing prime minister Theresa May said she had been disappointed that some ministers had failed to vote – and that she was sure her successor would take this into account when forming a Parliament.

(Like that’s going to happen! Only yesterday (July 17) she’s supposed to have made a jab at Boris Johnson in her farewell speech. If he wins, he might take some or all of them on, just to spite her.)

Let’s be honest, though – this result shows that government has ceased to function in the UK.

Democracy seems to be enjoying itself, though.

“and that she was sure her successor would take this into account when forming a Parliament” – I think you MAY have meant Government rather than Parliament, Mike! Or was that her spokesperson…?

I think I would have meant government too. Can’t recall the quote now so I’ll leave it as it is and these comments here.

I wish that they’d devote as much time and energy into getting a deal. We have wasted too much time, already and I’m sorry but openly removing the possibility is a mistake. It did for Theresa May and it will do for whoever comes next. £eaving without a deal must be a real possibility. If a deadline cannot focus the minds of our politicians, with there being serious consequences at the end of it, I don’t know what can. Theresa May was accused of “kicking the can down the road,” what do our M.P.s think that this is? What will it achieve, other than stasis? I hate to quote Theresa May but the best way to avoid no-deal is to have a deal and what are our M.P.s doing to achieve that? All that we hear is what M.P.s don’t want, not what they do. I am beyond exasperated.
