Tories will strip the elderly of pensions while they’re in ‘worst poverty in western Europe’

Iain Duncan Smith’s plan to raise the age at which people may claim state pension above the age at which many people may expect to die is evil enough.

It strips people of even the hope of receiving the pensions they have funded for their entire working lives.

But it becomes even worse when you realise that the Conservative government has already put UK pensioners in the worst poverty of any country in western Europe:

The SNP has warned the Tory government against a “callous assault” on UK pension policy by increasing the state pension age, which they say would have dire and disproportionate consequences across the UK.

Pension Reforms and Old Age Inequalities in Europe in a new report … found the proportion of elderly people living in severe poverty in the UK is five times what it was in 1986 – the largest increase among western European countries.

The SNP’s Westminster Pensions spokesperson, Mhairi Black MP, said: “The Tory’s government’s approach to the UK’s elderly population and state pension policy has been cruel and callous, and has punished the UK’s elderly population.

“From the burning injustices facing the WASPI women who have been denied the right to their state pension, to the stripping away of pension credit for the over 75s, this government’s attitude towards its older people is shameful.”

That is simply diabolical.

In contrast, perhaps you should bear the following in mind:

Labour’s election manifesto rejects increases in the state pension age above the age of 66.

That was Labour’s manifesto position in 2017 and it hasn’t changed.

That’s worth remembering, next time an election is called.

When the Tories introduced the “5 Bob pension” way back in the dark ages, it was a hollow reward, because they knew full well that most pensioners would die before that pension became payable! What really puzzles me though, is the fact that anyone other than the space invaders (AKA Tories) would vote Tory. There has to be ballot rigging or else most workers have been programmed to vote Tory by hypnosis!

It wasn’t the Tories, it was David Lloyd George, in the 1905-1909 Liberal government. The Tories fought it every inch of the way, so precipitating the 1910 constitutional crisis, which led to the reform of the House of Lords. Previous to that, of course, you were subject to the New Poor Law of 1834

I think you will find that it was the Liberal, Lloyd George, who introduced pensions between one and five shillings and, secondly, when Bevan introduced the NI Scheme in the late 1940s the life expectancy of a man was 66 years. It was calculated that of those who survived to that age the majority would claim for around only three years. Compare that with an expectancy of 78 years how can, under the present system, the pension be viable for so many more years if the retirement age is not increased in line?

If and when Duncan Smith loses his seat he’ll also lose Parliamentary Privilege. There are quite a few high-powered lawyers who intend to drag Duncan Smith to The Hague to face charges of crimes against humanity. He’ll also spend his life looking over his shoulder as I hear that there are few contracts out on him.
