More bad news for Boris as young people register to vote. Can you guess why?

Last Updated: September 4, 2019By

More than 100,000 people have registered to vote since this week began – mostly young people aged less than 34.

This is excellent news for political parties that normally attract the young – by which I mean Labour.

Government figures show that 52,408 applications were submitted on Monday, and 64,485 on Tuesday.

It isn’t unusual for there to be a leap in voter registration applications in early September – especially among young people – as students moving into new areas at the start of the new academic year traditionally do so around now.

But experts reckon this is just the beginning of an application avalanche.

The Guardian quoted Dr Toby James, a senior lecturer at the University of East Anglia who has authored reports on Britain’s low levels of voter registrations, who said: “I think that there is probably a tidal wave of applications to come.”

Labour has been working on voter registration drives, hoping to register and influence sufficient numbers of young voters to make a significant impact in marginal seats with large student populations.

Momentum’s target list includes Boris Johnson’s own constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

Cat Smith MP said the party was working hard to encourage young people to register to vote in support of Labour, “setting out our policies such as scrapping tuition fees and tackling the housing crisis.”

This Writer hopes Labour’s strategy is a huge success. Let’s face it: with Boris Johnson’s government collapsing around him, there has rarely been a better time for a left-wing government-in-waiting to show how much better-run the UK could be.

“how much better-run the UK could be”, yes to say the least, it couldn’t possibly be run any worse! We need to get the Tories out and NEVER let them get back in. It’ll take longer than my remaining lifetime to undo the damage they have done to this country.

One of the problems is that an election soon after the start of a University term may mean many students will be unregistered to vote at their new addresses

Be warned; some young people are Conservatives and many young people, regardless of their political persuasion, want us to leave the E.U. If I have learnt nothing else from the last few years, about our politics, it is that nothing, these days, is guaranteed and nothing is usual, or predictable. The political landscape is changing and the E.U. issue is redrawing the political lines.

Possibly, but MORE young people are left-wing/Labour and MORE young people want to remain in the EU.
