Let’s remind ourselves of Ian Austin’s record (this image is now several years old).

Two representatives of the Conservative government have called on voters to support the Tories, with the tired line that Jeremy Corbyn is unfit to be prime minister.

The BBC and other mainstream news sources have jumped on this, as the people concerned are both former Labour MPs.

But neither Ian Austin nor John Woodcock can be described as socialists.

Mr Austin is now the Conservative trade envoy to Israel, and John Woodcock is now the Conservatives’ special government envoy to tackle violent extremism.

Both were on the Blairite wing of the Labour Party.

Mr Austin left to sit as an Independent in February, over differences with Mr Corbyn. And the Labour whip was withdrawn from Mr Woodcock in April 2018, after allegations of sexual harassment were made against him.

These are the people the media are using to undermine Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party.

It seems to This Writer that John McDonnell, challenged on the subject, was absolutely right to ask, “What else do you expect him to do?

“When you are employed by the Tories you speak on behalf of the Tories.”

What a relief.

If anybody of substantial integrity had been the mouthpieces, it might have meant something. This is just a distraction.
