Tories to cut £70 a week from 11,000 state pensions

Short-changing the elderly: the Tories love taking money from people who depend on it.

Statistics show older people constitute the majority of Conservative voters – I bet they never knew the Tories would stab them in the back so soon!

It’s even worse because the allowance for adult dependents is being phased out in any case – the Tories are simply cutting it earlier than it would have ended.

It turns out 11,000 pensioners are still receiving the allowance. From April, those people will lose £3,500 per year.

The DWP is claiming that current recipients of the allowance will be able to claim a means-tested benefit like Universal Credit or Pension Credit. Good luck with that, folks!

The simple fact is that Tories love to take state money away from people who depend on it.

And they don’t even care that they’re attacking people who helped put them in office; they think you’re so stupid you’ll vote for them again. Are they right?

I voted labour. I still think that labour should have won. Tories cheated to get in again.

Tories are in with a whacking majority. An awful lot of older voters will be dead and gone by the next election and certainly by the one after. Why bother courting the older vote!

I am 75 but I agree. Bring down the voting age to 16, the young are the ones who have to live with the chosen(?) gpvernment. Incidentally, I not only voted Labour I actively campaigned right up to voting day! So did many others of my age or close.

      Then I applaud you!

Had Labour stuck to their 2017 election pledge to honour the referendum result, they may have stood a chance, but changing course 180 degrees sealed their fate. I use the words ‘they’ and ‘their’ because they no longer represent me, after voting for them all my life in the Brexit capital of Stoke on Trent. Had the referendum result been overturned this country would have been finished. We the the voters are in charge not mealy mouthed politicians.

I tend to agree with your comments about Labour’s Brexit policy. Keir Starmer’s determination to push a plan that wouldn’t work is generally considered to have been the nail in that particular coffin.

I look forward to seeing how your closing claim fares when it comes into contact with the Conservative government that I suspect you may have joined others to vote into office.

I did point out in an earlier comment that this policy was part of the 2007 Pension Act whereby payments of an adult dependency increase would not be made after April 2010 and for those in receipt on that date it would cease oin April 2020. It is I’m afraid part of the 1997 – 2010 Labour legacy, not a Conservative cut.

You are mistaken. The Tories had agreed to phase it out as it naturally fell out of use, but the new development is that they are stopping it prematurely. Please read the articles before commenting on them!

Please see https://www.ifs.org.uk/bns/bn105.pdf or not the Child Action Povery Group article of 10thFebruary 2010 (before the General Election) and you will note that the phasing out was either when eligibility ceased or 6th April 2020 whichever was the sooner. I am well aware of this ruling, being affected by it.

You know what? I’ve had another look and you’re right – but then, if you look at the article, it doesn’t say any different. I wish you – and people like you – wouldn’t keep trying to gaslight people into thinking they have done something they have not. If I catch you doing it again, you’ll be banned from commenting.

      • Robbo January 18, 2020 at 5:28 pm - Reply

Thank you for your apology…I was not attempting to gaslight but picking up on a story that was simply attributing the policy incorrectly.

        • Mike Sivier January 18, 2020 at 9:54 pm - Reply

I did not apologise. The story referred correctly to the policy.

And as you seem determined to nitpick, cause offence and attempt to belittle, it seems I have no choice but to ban you from commenting on this site. You may still enjoy the articles but you will not be permitted to cause any further disruption here.
