Are the Tories stepping up their campaign of persecution against people with disabilities?

As seen on Twitter: there’s many a truth told in jest [Image: Darren Cullen https://www.spellingmistakescostlives.com ]

It’s back to business as usual at Ashton-under-Lyne Job Centre, according to Charlotte Hughes of The poor side of life.

And she has bad news for people claiming Personal Independence Payment, at least in that area:

There has been a large increase in people being denied their PIP assessments.  Yes I do realise that this has always happened, I know this and I help people with their appeals, but it’s now got to a point that they’re point blank denying everyone their PIP benefit which is needed so much by those that claim it.

This got me thinking, the government are targeting disabled people extremely aggressively from every angle, everything that they do is monitored, their constantly under an evil spotlight from the DWP.

You might ask why doesn’t the government leave them alone? They never will because they’re an easy target, they know that many won’t fight back because they simply don’t have the energy to do so.

Whilst I’m writing about this I spoke to a man that had recently won his appeal to reinstate his PIP. The tribunal also decided that he should be given some back pay also which was 12 months worth of payments. Whilst being overjoyed at this, he knows that he’ll have to go through this again and again and then some more.

Just so.

This is just anecdotal evidence, of course – but there’s enough of it across the UK to call it a pattern, I think.

That’s why people being told they don’t deserve disability benefits should always appeal against the decision – and should always seek help in pursuing those appeals.

It isn’t hard to find organisations that provide this help – there are plenty online and if you’re stumped there’s always Citizens Advice.

It is always worth appealing. The person I care for was awarded 0 points by Atos, 0 points at Mandatory Reconsideration, 13 for Daily Living and 8 for Mobility at Tribunal. Although there is a long wait, the chances of a fair decision at Tribunal are extremely high.

I think even some of the Jobcentre staff are starting to feel ashamed, or at least concerned about the situation of poverty. We got a donation from them yesterday at the foodbank, Jobcentre staff had collected 3 bin liners full of warm winter coats and brought them down to the centre (we do more than food).

They’re clearly hoping that a constant round of appeals will force many applicants to give up. The appeal process is already snowed under, but guess what, Boris intends to legislate against the judiciary, shut them up. Un-vote the fat boy? Too late my friend, the Nazis have taken over, and are aiming to stay in power forever.

When I first applied for DLA in 2006 (under New Labour) it was rejected. My GP said that everyone was being denied and I should appeal. I did this with the help of a disability rights community worker and he confirmed that he was not aware of any claims that year that had been awarded on first application. He helped me appeal and he said he had a 99% success rate. I was awarded top mobility lower care and then lifetime award. The notorious WCA was introduced shortly after that and PIP since.

The persecution of the disabled has a long history in the UK. The current govt is just busy ratcheting it up; it is never ending and one wonders what “peak persecution” will be, and when? Will benefits be reduced to modern workhouses, where the only payments will be made to those who profit from private institutions where the disabled are incarcerated.

It’s getting worse in Cumbria too! I am part of a peer to peer mental health support group and everyone that has been reassessed this year has been refused PIP. It’s only a small group yet the 6 of us who have been reassessed out of 14 in the group have all failed! I have a movement ang gait disorder caused by psych meds as well as incontenence, severe depression and anxiety/paranoia and use a scooter 0 mobility and 6 care points! Others in the group have severe lymphodema, learning disabilities, fibromylaga, cancer and we all have various mental health issues including DID, schizoprenia, BPD and are classed as complex/severe mental health needs yet none of us are being given PIP.
