New power-sharing deal restores NI devolution – in order to quit Johnson’s UK?

Devolution: The Tories will be quick to celebrate the restoration of devolved government in Northern Ireland. Has it not occurred to any of them that the Northern Irish hate Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal and now want to quit the UK altogether?

At long last – three years since the ‘Cash for Ash’ scandal that ended the last Northern Ireland power-sharing deal, it seems MLAs are returning to Stormont.

The new power-sharing deal means devolved government in Northern Ireland will resume.

According to Boris Johnson:

Do you think he hasn’t realised that they’re all getting back together in order to take NI out of the UK?

What would be really damning is if they decided they won’t even reunify with the Republic.

I hope Northern Ireland does re-unify with the Republic, but I’d be surprised if it happens. The Protestants are vehemently Loyalist and many of them even think they are British, and that Northern Ireland is British, conflating Britain and the UK. But hatred of the Tories might be a unifying factor. The Republicans hate the Tories with a passion, as do I. I went to South Armagh during the ceasefire in 94 and met the IRA, and boy did they hate the Tories! I attended the ‘Bigger Than Borders’ peace rally in Co. Monaghan.

As an “Englishman” I lived for almost five years in the North of Ireland beginning in 1965. Within weeks I became a Republican supporter. The Island WILL unite soon. I certainly hope it does, and that Scotland leaves GB to take up its rightful place as a full member of the European Union. Well done, quitling English. Meanwhile I’m off to anew life in Greece, my new European homeland. Good luck, third country. You’ll need it,

      Greece!

That country was in a lot of financial trouble only a few years ago. Is that all over now?

Might this be the moment for some imaginative thinking? Why not suggest that the north of Ireland have a kind of semi-detached relationship to England? Remain in the EU with all the trade advantages that gives(notably with free trade with southern Ireland) but everybody can keep their national preferences/culture etc like flags and language choices, colour preferences, folk songs etc.(They could choose which monarch to have . William or Harry’n’Meghan (or none). Surely, in the interests of a peaceful future, the remnant of the UK (whatever it looks like in a few years), together with southern Ireland AND the EU could get together to supply the equivalent of the subsidies that the London government gives to the Belfast Assembly to keep the place going. God knows, it’s not very much money as the north of Ireland is one of the poorest places in the EU.
