Is Plymouth the first city to report widespread STARVATION due to Tory policies?

I, Daniel Blake: in Ken Loach’s film, a single mother starves herself to feed her children. Eventually, desperate to eat, she rips open a tin of cold beans in a food bank and eats it. That scene is being repeated regularly, in real life, according to staff at the food bank in Plymouth.

This report on Plymouth Live should be shocking – but is it?

Some of us have lived with the consequences of Conservative government benefit deprivation for years, and have recorded many, many deaths arising from these cruel and unnecessary policies.

Now the food bank at Plymouth is reporting widespread starvation throughout that city.

The report states that more than a third of food voucher recipients there are children.

And some are in work that does not pay enough for them to afford food after paying off other household bills – once again proving false the Tory claim that the best way out of poverty is employment.

And never forget: there is plenty of money available – larger employers in particular are simply keeping the majority of it for themselves.

The psychological harm caused by this enforced starvation is clearly demonstrated by reports that people receiving parcels after days without food are bursting into tears, devouring food the instant they have it.

It’s a classic “softening up” technique, often used by torturers to make their victims more pliable.

And the Tories will have known this from the moment Iain Duncan Smith imposed Universal Credit on the first pilot area, many years ago.

But “softening up” for what? It can’t be for people to accept even less; when you already aren’t receiving enough to survive, there isn’t far to go.

So we are left with the uncomfortable reality:

Universal Credit is being used by the Conservatives to send perfectly good people to early graves.

Can anyone prove me wrong?

Population reduction might be a part of the plan, or just that those who die are deemed expendable in the implementation of the overall plan to subjugate the masses via social control. We’re nothing more than Lab rats to the Tories and the perversely named Centre for Social Justice.

Despite crushing poverty and deprivation, they STILL they vote overwhelmingly toerag or lib dim (sic) in that part of the world. They always have.

you honestly think that those suffering like this at the hands of the torys are the ones actually voting the tory’s in? i doubt that. thing is that its those with money who live in those places that outnumber the poor. most poor folk cant afford to live in the areas the posh .well off live in. AND ITS THE POSH WELL OFF FOLK THAT VOTE TORY.AND WHAT ABOUT THE RUMOURS THAT WENT ROUND AFTER THE LAST ELECTION. ? about people not being allowed to vote because they didn’t have or didn’t show positive ID to the people standing at the doors of the venues where people were supposed to vote. did those in charge of those buildings know this was happening? it had been talked about but never implemented. those people were breaking the law by interfering with an election. AND what about the reports of people voting twice? we heard the reports or read of them but i dont recollect hearing of an investigation or its outcome. at the previous elections there were reports of underhand dealings surfaced but nothing heard of after that… were they suppressed? were the papers paid off? we dont know, but i simply cannot see people who are systematically being starved to death or left without a home to fend on the streets actually voting anything but labour seeing as they were the ones wanting to put all that they are going thru right.

I certainly think some of the people who voted the Tories in are going to suffer. I saw a news article last week saying that ex-“Red Wall” constituencies can’t expect any joy from the current government (if I read the headline right).

The other part of the problem is that some of the people (many of them?) who are worst-affected don’t bother to vote at all.

      @hugosmum

We’re always told of a lack of home ownership in the SW because of the amount of people from elsewhere owning 2nd homes (Vast majority for rent, some non-residential holiday homes) in that region more than anywhere else. Yet a toerag or a libdim is returned in most constituencies.

AFAIK you can only vote in one constituency in a GE. All those with 2nd homes (Most likely to vote toerag) would most likely vote in their home constituencies (In the home counties)

Something like 22 toerag seats in the SW were under investigation for electoral expense return fraud. Yet they voted toerag there last time, too.

The SW in general voted leave in the referendum by quite some margin in most places, and in his wisdom starmer decided it’d be wise to bulldoze through an abrogation of the party’s promise to respect the referendum result.

What a way to go about winning hearts & minds, AND VOTES!!

They either vote toerag or lib dem down that way. Always have. I doubt these foodbanks will change anything soon down that way.

sorry, can you tell me what AFAIK actually stands for? (do so wish people would not use this sort of word shortening/initials etc.. not everyone understands them/ DWP/GE etc most people know but afraid that one has me stumped. …

As Far As I Know. It’s now what might be termed old-style Net users’ abbreviation. Back in the 90s, when only a few million people were on the Internet worldwide, if you didn’t understand and use these acronyms you were considered to be a lower form of life. I know – I was there!

well Mike, i find that pretty disgusting and those GEEKS who started this initialising everything must have thought they were being pretty clever bringing in these “non” words … why do it? to baffle those who didnt go to uni or something? well i am not slow witted for one. i spent at least 6 years training having passed entrance exams to get into student nurse training then exams every year after that to get my well earned official letters behind my name.and have 2 sets of them if i wanted to use them.not to mention specialising on a burns unit for 18 months. but i never do. i was 60 when i first started using a computer. within a year i had learned to build websites, i had done my family tree (most of the main line) was running a chat room jointly with another woman, did all the graphics and animations for that msn chat room, made animated sigis(signatures ) for people to use in emails. and was teaching other older people basic computer maintenance. up until i got my first computer in the march before my 60th i had never used one in my life before but it didnt take me long………. but i still cannot understand the use of these stupid initialised words.. DWP/DSSS. AND THINGS LIKE THAT ARE BAD ENOUGH.. but they are organisations etc.. but AFAIK and the like is downright ridiculous. might as well say something like…….. BTAOE OR MAWSSL………… IN FACT WHY NOT GO THE WHOLE HOG N DISPENSE WITH WORDS ALTOGETHER AND JUST USE THE FIRST LETTER of each word. (incidentally..in case no one knows what those 2 sets of random looking letters means.. they are both there within this rant.(cos rant it is………) now can we please not use unknown random initialising of words and sentences. so we can ALL understand whats being said. after all its not polite to exclude some by doing that.is it?

They did it at a time when bandwidth was at a premium, so there was a perceived need to transmit messages using the fewest characters possible, and much of it fell into common use. I don’t think anybody’s trying to exclude anybody else.

now THAT i can understand. not that they are suffering right now but cannot avoid the nastiness of the Tory’s, its only one wage away/one day/1 week/1 month away for at least some of them to lose their job/income/ become ill/disabled etc. in the not too distant future a good number of those who voted Tory will find themselves in similar circumstances to those they vilify now.
as for the 2nd part of your message… those worst affected are probably so depressed they cant see anything helping them now or any one.so why bother. and who can blame them? maybe they needed money to get them to their nearest polling station or were too weak from lack of food, or because of illness to get there. all those on the street (can they vote without a postal address? not sure on that one).
loads of reasons why they didn’t vote. most valid too. not sure “cant be bothered” might not be a valid reason if they are/were depressed.

    • Mike Sivier February 18, 2020 at 3:10 pm - Reply

People on the street were offered way in which they could have a postal address in order to vote. The Arnolfini arts centre in Bristol offered itself up as a place where people could register, and there was a brewery elsewhere in the city that did the same. I understand that pattern was repeated across the country – and if it wasn’t at the last election then I hope it will be at the next.

Last time I looked we have labour corrupt council in Plymouth . Selling everything off for students flats nit giving a dam about locals who live there pay taxes

    • Mike Sivier February 23, 2020 at 1:47 pm - Reply

Does anyone believe this? Can anyone confirm it?

    • trev February 23, 2020 at 2:28 pm - Reply

David, IF Plymouth Council are selling property to be converted into student flats as you claim, why/how does that constitute or imply “corruption”? Isn’t it more likely that Councils have been forced to sell off property because of the shortfall in funding from Central Gov. ?
