Are they dead? The DWP has lost 70,000 benefit claimants since 2014, ‘saving’ £75m

Are they dead?

At least one in eight people eligible for Employment and Support Allowance have fallen off the Department for Work and Pensions’s books before receiving underpayments due to them.

Are they dead?

They were lost because of the huge time lag between the problem of underpayments being identified and the DWP taking action to contact affected claimants.

Are they dead?

Around 70,000 people’s cases have been closed – people with the most severe health conditions – saving the DWP a whopping £75 million, at least.

Are they dead?

The DWP has made the very good point that some claimants may have moved home since they were underpaid and writing multiple times to an old address, or phoning an out-of-date number is unlikely to detect them.

So, are they dead?

It’s an easy enough search; you check the public registers in the areas where these people used to live, to see if they have been registered as having passed away. It isn’t difficult at all.

And if it turns out they are dead, then the DWP has serious questions to answer – after leaving these people without help for so long that they passed away. Right?

OTHER THAN THAT EMPLOY SOME OF THOSE DWP WALLERS TO TRAWL THROUGH THE OFFICIAL ELECTORAL ROLLS. THE DWP BEING A GOVERNMENT BODY SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO THOSE SURELY. THEY SHOULD HAVE NEXT OF KIN DOWN TOO SO HAVE THEY CONTACTED THEM? JUST 2 WAYS THEY COULD FIND SOME OF THOSE MISSING BODIES.

The figure what the DWP say could be lies and it could be far higher how do we know that the figure they say is the truth look at all the things the DWP say then retract the figure and make up a excuse just when they get asked questions you should never trust a conservative or the DWP they will do anything possible to cover it up.

With a death rate of 65 per 1000 per annum for ESA claimants. (Last death rate published by the DWP years ago.) A significant number will be dead.

Some may have changed address, but 70,000 ? What about HMRC Tax records? Electoral registers, etc. The debt collectors and bailiffs manage to track people down alright when you’re owing something.
