The Tory plan for care means either you pay for it or you go without. Poor people need not apply

Care: the Tories don’t.

The phrase “social care” is anathema to the Conservatives because they don’t care about anybody apart from themselves.

Personally, This Writer believes everyone who is capable of looking after a relative who has care needs should do so. My own family took in my grandmother during her later years and it was, in fact, rewarding.

But there are many people who don’t have this option, and it seems the Tories are likely to leave them high and dry.

If you can’t pay – they’ll take it away.

The growing crisis in adult social care risks creating a “system for the rich” that leaves poor communities unable to access the essential help they need, ministers are being warned.

Two care homes are closing for every new facility that opens as providers attempt to stay afloat amid a multibillion-pound shortfall in funding. However, evidence seen by the Observer suggests places are disappearing from care homes that already have a shortfall of beds, while new facilities are opening for those who can pay their own way.

thing is that these days every person who is under working age and able to do so, is expected to do a job as well as care for whoever they care for, anyone who is a carer for a relative, who gets pip/dla or AA can get carers allowance of £60 plus per week/ BUT if they are caring too many hours to be able to work as well , and therefore get income support or any other means tested benefit, they lose the equivalence of that carers allowance all except the pittance they are allowed to earn before stoppages. (when i was giving benefits advice some 25 years ago, that amount was £20..dont know hopw much it is now but certainly doesn’t pay for more than 1 visit a week ) so they get their carers allowance but only about £30 plus of the income support which is supposed to be for them to pay for their housing costs, food and personal things like shampoo/conditioner and other stuff similar, stockings/shoes/clothes. etc. the carers is supposed to help them do the care work they do. periodically the DWP fetch them into the job centre. they dont force carers to get a job but do ask if they’ve thought of getting one.how the hell can they get a job that pays enough on the hours they they have left in a day especially when most have families ,a hubby, kids, a house of their own to clean.on top of their caring duties. they dont get any help except free prescriptions etc. but nothing for bus fares.. which are too high for them to afford to do their caring daily, the person they care for has to subsidise these bus fares or petrol costs if lucky enough to have a car or other form of transport. not many do so its either taxis or buses. ( not much difference for one woman i know, who, since losing her private tenancy 2 years ago, had to get a social housing flat a further few miles away from her mother who she cares for. buses are hourly from there to nearest town. has to catch 3 each way at a cost of £15 per visit. that is paid for by her mother out of her pension.making things more difficult for her.
just one example. they could at least give carers a weekly or monthly bus pass like they do for job hunters. even if only half fare.it would help.

It’s alright looking after elderly/infirm relatives, we’ve done that in our family, but it gets to a point when you can no longer do it because they need 24 hour care, need lifting in/out of bed/bath, taking to the toilet etc. then they have to go into care.
