Boris Johnson has displayed his ignorance again by announcing that he wants the population of the UK to develop “herd immunity” to coronavirus – and then describing something completely different.

Herd immunity involves the vaccination of an entire population (or the majority of it). But there is no vaccine for COVID-19 coronavirus. Johnson is suggesting that we all allow ourselves to be infected, so the strong develop their own immunity and the weak simply die off. That’s survival of the fittest or natural selection.

So where I state above that Johnson is displaying his ignorance, I am referring to his ignorance of his own responsibility to ensure the safety of the population, rather than ignorance of the concepts to which he is referring.

I think he knows exactly what herd immunity is – and is simply lying about it to the majority of us. He thinks we’re ignorant too.

Well, he’s going to be disappointed.

Here’s somebody who certainly isn’t ignorant:

This is Johnson’s ‘Churchill moment’ – his chance to rouse the nation to fight an implacable threat. And he has blown it:

Letting coronavirus run its course seems to be exactly the plan, with scientific advisor Patrick Vallance protesting that allowing 60 per cent of the population to be infected will help build “herd immunity”. He says the aim is to protect the most vulnerable people while this is going on, but I can see no exertion being made in that direction. Therefore I tend to agree with the following:

And the government’s use of different language to describe its current position has been exposed as a clear example of “Emperor’s new clothes” syndrome:

The real message is clear for anybody with the wit to hear it: millions will die.

But what’s behind this lunatic behaviour? Apparently it is an obsession with the economy, rather than health:
