B&M is donating £1million to UK food banks to fight coronavirus-related supply gap

This is wonderful news and B&M has set an excellent example for other businesses to follow.

I hope they will.

Food banks have been struggling as members of the public quit funding and donating to them in order to panic-buy goods in anticipation of the coronavirus crisis.

Discount retailer B&M [has] announced a national £1 million donation to support UK food banks.

Each one of its 670 stores will support a local foodbank with a £1,500 donation of food, cleaning and personal hygiene goods to reach struggling families.

Well that’s good news, though I can’t help but remind myself that B&M participated in Tory Workfare with unpaid workers who would have been foodbank users themselves had they refused to do unpaid work, or arrived late or took a day off.

Donations are still coming in at my local foodbank though it is usually a fairly quiet time of year anyway, and I might be mistaken but I think we normally get a lot more chocolate Easter eggs being donated than we have received so far this year. We received a large food donation on Friday from a Infants School that has now closed, a teacher brought it in her car, which is very generous and heartwarming. Several donations have come in from people who haven’t donated before, unfortunately some contained a lot of out-of-date produce that we can’t use, probably what’s happening is people are cleaning their cupboards out as they have restocked with new stuff.

Spot-on Trev. One of the biggest workfare exploiters about, they were.

AFAIK, they’re still one of the lowest-paying outlets in the retail sector.

Very much to their credit. But I wish they’d realise that these sorts of donations are needed when there isn’t a pandemic going around as well. Food-poverty happens at all times under Austerity, not just at times when the BBC website has a whole new section devoted to ‘Coronavirus’.
