Universal Credit: entitlement=£409; claimant had nothing. Couling was right about disappointment

People claiming Universal Credit because they lost income due to the coronavirus are starting to have the rude awakening predicted for them.

The Department for Work and Pensions’s UC supremo Neil Couling is on record as having told the Tory press “There will be a few confused people out there for the first couple of weeks because they have not had experience of how Universal Credit works before.

“People will get their result and they’ll say, ‘Hang on, that’s not what I was expecting’.”

He’s right there. Consider this response to a claim, posted on Twitter by a disgruntled claimant:

Now people who normally have jobs are discovering what This Site has been saying for years – that UC is a tool to put people into debt.

New claimants will take home substantially less than they had anticipated if they received a redundancy payment in the past month or declared earnings from self-employment.

And as I stated before:

The system is designed to bleed you dry, weeks before you get any payments. Then you have to beg for a loan, and then you spend months trying to pay off that loan, while the lowered payments you get because you took the loan mean you go further into debt.

Once again, it seems none of the measures the Tories said they imposed to help the people of the UK are any good at all.

Even if the laid-off workers had been allowed to claim JSA instead of UC they would have been bitterly disappointed.

They would have begun to receive their Benefits within days, fair enough, but at the miserly sum of £74 per week (less Council Tax = £69 p/w), nowhere near enough to live on.

I’ve just had to apply for a DWP Budgeting loan to meet unexpected expenses but it will eventually be deducted from my JSA at the rate of £16 per fortnight. No extra money because of the current emergency and any unforseen circumstances that may bring.

Ok for the MPs though, an extra £10,000 expenses on top of their £82,000 p/a. The Government could at least have given an extra £20 p/w to those on JSA, or something at least, maybe an extra tenner to those volunteering at the foodbanks.
