Backlash against Sunak’s ‘meal deal’ voucher scheme that ignores people in genuine need

Members of the public are speaking out against Rishi Sunak’s offer of vouchers supporting half the price of eating out – pointing out that people need to be able to afford the other half of the cost before they can use it at all.

It’s an upper-middle-class jolly that won’t help people who rely on food banks, or carers, or beleaguered NHS staff who Sunak’s own government is persecuting, they say – rightly.

And they say the decision to offer meal vouchers was in very poor taste when Boris Johnson was keen to stop providing such vouchers to parents of children who receive free school meals over the summer holidays, even though the Covid-19 crisis has put many of them in extreme need.

Here’s just a selection of the responses. See if you agree with them, rather than Sunak:

(Good point about the self-employed.)

Yes, what a world.

To think that we could have had fairness under a Jeremy Corbyn government instead, if only people had engaged their brains before going to the polling booths last year.

Come to that, isn’t it incredible that it is too much to hope for people to engage their brains before voting?

I’ve eaten out once in the last 8 years, and my brother-in-law was paying. Why not give the extra £80 per month to JSA claimants as well as UC ?

Ah, but Mike – you simply have to think like a tory in this instance…Super rishi’s been paying 80% of lazy-arsed people’s wages for months on end, and the boozers & bookies – for the most part – have been shut so the feckless idlers have had nowt to spend their ‘largesse’ on.

Remember ‘beer & bingo’? That’s what us plebs are about. Now, super rishi’s offering us the chance to dine out like civilised people for only half the cost, instead of spaffing our overly generous handouts on takeaways, and in off-licences.

I don’t know what you mean by that last remark as I haven’t been holding them back and I haven’t deleted them either.

It’s all about fascist tories’ insatiable greed for profits and compare and contrast this stupid fascist tory idea of vouchers to entice women and men to waste their hard earned money on expensive meals with the latest arrogant statement from fascist tories.

Today fascist tories announced gyms, pools and outdoor gigs and told us lazy peasants’ ‘time to ‘help Britons work off their lockdown lard!’ (Source in Evening Standard, 9th July, 2020). Here’s looking at you fascist arrogant bloated Boris!

Not a penny to help the increasing number of impoverished women and men – no it’s all about fascist tories looking to increase profits!! Not a penny for impoverished mothers’ children because they can starve rather than receive the insulting ‘free school meal vouchers!’

Little england is now little england and it is a failed state!
