If you want to stop the Tory class war, boycott the businesses that help them

It’s all about money: if Boris Johnson didn’t have any, he couldn’t harm anyone. So why are we supporting the people who support him?

In a previous article I called for anyone harmed by Tory policies – like students whose ‘A’ level results were downgraded at random by the Department of Education, relatives of people who have died of Covid-19 and so on – to do what they can to stop the Johnson government at a grassroots level.

This means starving it of cash.

The way to do that is to boycott businesses that are run by Tories or that donate to the Tory Party; if you run a business, deny employment to graduates of further education institutions that have denied students places because of the Tory ‘A’ level downgrade; and to urge your friends who have been simiilarly affected to do the same.

I think it would be valuable to have lists of such organisations, so everybody knows who to avoid – and already some names are coming in.

The information is unconfirmed, but so far I am told that these firms donate to the Conservatives:

Tate & Lyle (sugar manufacturers)

Warburtons (bread manufacturers)

Wetherspoons (pub chain)

I’d like to add to this list as I go.

Feel free to contribute names of offending organisations – national, international and local. I’ll look up Tory donations soon.

Evolve politics had a list in 2018:
    https://evolvepolitics.com/stopfundingthetories-here-are-36-companies-youll-want-to-avoid-if-you-dont-want-to-unwittingly-fund-the-tories/

    Some more here:

I suspect if everyone stuck to a strict boycott the entire economic system would collapse, as nobody would use banks, drive, fly or buy anything, as these corporate donors own so many companies that are totally entwined into our global “just-in-time” economic system.

AKA get your collapse in early to avoid the rush. Bring it on.

Totally agree, download the donor list

    There’s a Wiki for Tory donors here – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Conservative_Party_(UK)_donors

A few names that are probably realistic to boycott.

    Malcolm Walker – Iceland
    Anthony Bamford – JCB
    William Adderley – Dunelm
Fred & Peter Done – Betfred (also Health Assured, a gambling addiction business!)
Richard Harpin – HomeServe, property repairs (also, Checkatrade website)
Malcolm Healey – Wren Kitchens and Ebuyer, online electronics.
    Charlie Mullins – Pimlico Plumbers,
    Tim Steiner – Ocado

The majority of them are financiers, in property development, or have sold their companies, so it’s a bit hard to boycott.

sainsbury’s are big donors to the tories! i also believe ( from my poor memory) tesco do as well.

    • jgwood34 August 15, 2020 at 7:55 am - Reply

Sainsbury stopped a few years ago, think that was a decision to just stop, not sure about tesco, nothing on the donor list, which i have for the last decade on my laptop, thanks for links to other datasets, i shall download them, other ways are if you are shareholders your vote counts against donation to political parties so i am sorta looking at the tory donatory companies vs there big shareholders and what they support, it is time consuming

Next are supposed to be big Tory donors

      Okay, I’ll add that in.

Also I think it’s important to write to them and tell them why you are doing it. That way they will know why you are doing it. They can’t assume it’s just because you’re skint!

Yes, good idea. Although I think it should be clear that there’s no desire for them to change in order to get our trade back again; if they did, and we did, they would go straight back to donating cash to the Tories.

    • jgwood34 August 15, 2020 at 8:04 am - Reply

Might be a good idea, i let them have a month or two of wondering what financially hit them and then tell them

Huge one is Associated British Foods, owner of Silver Spoon Sugar, Primark, Twinings, Patak’s, Kingsmill – to name but a few.
They are into Pharmaceuticals and all sorts.

Not at all difficult to find the millions in donations they have made over the years.

An excellent initiative. If we find that there are just so many donors, or, rather that there are a few donors but they own vast swathes of the economy, so that it would be impractical to boycott them all, how about a campaign focussed on just one of them. Preferably one that could be boycotted without harming most people’s lifestyles.

Then we could use the campaign to draw attention to all the others. In fact, I suspect that our Tory opponents would help us with that by complaining that it would be unfair to just pick on,for example, just Ocado, or Twinings, when there are so many other donors . Therebye revealing the scale of the problem.
