You can’t trust the Tories. But did their lies manage to convince you at the election?

He hasn’t actually said this: but Boris Johnson definitely DID lie to you in order to win the general election, and now we all know it. How can he expect us to trust him or his degraded party?

The Tories lied blatantly to win the 2019 general election, according to research from King’s College, London.

Tactics to mislead the public included  altering a video of Sir Keir Starmer and posing as a fact-checker on Twitter during a leaders’ debate.

The clip was edited to show the current Labour leader, then shadow Brexit secretary, failing to answer a question on the EU when in fact he had responded to it in a live television interview.

The report said the Tories also deliberately shared “poorly formatted and low-quality” posts on social media, including a widely-ridiculed tweet using the comic sans font, to gain attention through critical coverage.

After a public information campaign highlighted five ways of spreading false information last year, the Tory campaign was found to have used four of them.

Fact-checking organisation First Draft found that Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats all published misleading advertising during the campaign – but the Tories were by far the worst.

First Draft said 88 per cent of their most shared online adverts between December 1-4 contained misleading information, compared to 6.7 per cent for Labour.

King’s College researchers said the Tory government’s – let’s not beat around the bush – lies created trust issues for the public, at a time when the governing party is trying to convince us it can be trusted to tell us the facts about Covid-19:

“It wants citizens to believe the message that it is ‘succeeding’ in controlling the epidemic, despite its recent electoral record of using disinformation tactics and admitting it unapologetically.”

The Tories have – unsurprisingly – denied everything, even though they had previously admitted altering the video footage, unapologetically.

And their spokesperson added a few more statements you might consider to be stretching credibility:

“We are delivering on the promises the British public elected us on, getting Brexit done, investing in our public services and levelling-up across the country.“

It’s a good question, isn’t it?

Would Tory voters have done so if they knew how much disinformation the party was using in its campaign? And do they believe what the Tories are saying now?

Sadly This Site can’t do a poll about this – there’s no way of ensuring that only Tory voters would respond.

Mike, it’s Stockholm syndrome-the abused fall in love with the abuser. Many voted Tory because they are in love with their house prices and don’t care about anything else. Many poor people voted Tory because they were groomed over years that the country was being dragged down by welfare claimants and immigrants -of course the reality was it was being dragged down by the Tories and their friends in the financial sector.

In my time campaigning for Lanour I was staggered at the level of dumbed-downess and gut wrenching ignorance of people even those who are, apparently, educated. I can only explain by suggesting that garbage media, trash celebrityism and wealth worship via the media and an anti-intellectual atmosphere has created this.

    I think we’re in a dark place.

I agree, the level of stupidity and ignorance amongst the general population is frightening, and the believing of the lies and propaganda has made me realise how right Joseph Goebbels was:-

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

In fairness, that doctored video of stammer looking stumped has been a reflection of his time as (alleged) opposition leader.

He’s been absolutely clueless. Utterly woeful. Small wonder the right-wing-biased MSM call him the right man for the job.

Oh, and people deserted labour in droves not only because de piffle lied to them, but MUCH more so because stammer steamrolled through the 2nd referendum with a remain option through; despite the policy being to respect the result being far more appealing to voters.

You only need look at the polls to see what happened before and after stammer got his way…

Agree totally. In 2017 the Labour vote in the Red Wall areas that had collapsed under Blair INCREASED. The gift to the Tories was making Remain and a 2nd referendum the central issue. Now we’ve got Blair 2.0 under Starmer.

      We;re in lots of trouble.

When I was campaigning for Labour I got a lot of “but how will they pay for it all?” My answer of “by taxing the likes of Google, Ebay, Starbucks etc didn’t seem to help, all I got was nonsense about the Tories being better with money! The media lies have done their job :(

Yes. Are you going to go back to those people and ask them how they think the Tories are paying for it all?
