Andrew Bridgen destroys his government’s credibility on EU trade talks

Andrew Bridgen: winner of this week’s “Inverse Genius” award.

Everyone with any political nous in the UK has been laughing at eurosceptic Andrew Bridgen after he swallowed both feet (metaphorically) in a Channel 4 News interview.

Discussing his Fuhrer Boris Johnson’s plan to renege on the EU withdrawal agreement that he signed in January, Bridgen said – well, see for yourself:

The reaction on Twitter has been universal:

What a… typical Conservative MP.

I watched the interview and, like many others, I shook my head in disbelief that he is still coming out with this stuff.
BUT millions of British voters will NOT have had the same reaction, unfortunately. This is precisely the kind of stuff still being pumped out by the Mail and the Sun and the Express on a daily basis. And it is believed!

This is going to be a long, hard road of discovery for many. But we don’t actually learn lessons in life, even as we experience setbacks, unless someone else gives us a convincing explanation.

This is where the current Labour leadership is so weak. They are happy to bang on about “incompetence” by the government (fair enough) but they should be pointing out what is wrong with the whole idea of nationalism and “foreigner bashing” as a way of conducting a country.
But they won’t do that. Even Emily Thornberry , for whom I had a lot of respect, seems to be keeping it quiet.
At what point do they actually expect to be able to safely let rip? When the lorries are queuing back from Dover past Ashford?
When the food and other prices are clearly going up?
When farmers plead with government for state aid because they can’t sell their food to the EU any more?
    When?
