Johnson’s ministers can’t even employ good bodyguards; this one left his gun on a plane

Dominic Raab: he’s geographically incompetent – his previous claim to fame being that he didn’t know the importance of the Dover-Calais crossing – so it’s a miracle he or his bodyguard even got on the right plane.

You may be forgiven if you thought the bodyguard in this story was employed by Serco.

After all the Johnson government’s privatisation disasters (including with Serco on the ‘test and trace’ affair), it’s an obvious conclusion to draw.

(In fact G4S is a more likely culprit – remember, that firm has form since its botch-up of security for the 2012 London Olympics. But This Writer would not have put it past Dominic Raab to have hired Carillion. Think about it.)

It transpires that the guilty party was a genuine member of the UK’s police – who also have a record of blundering, especially in this regard:

In February, a bodyguard for former prime minister David Cameron was investigated for reportedly leaving his gun in a plane toilet.

In this case, the details are as follows:

A cleaner is reported to have found the loaded Glock 19 pistol in its holster on a seat on the United Airlines flight after it landed in London on Friday.

The foreign secretary had been in Washington DC to speak to US politicians about Brexit.

Scotland Yard said an internal investigation was taking place.

The cleaner raised the alarm after finding the weapon, the Sun reported, and police boarded the plane – before realising the gun belonged to one of Mr Raab’s close protection officers.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “We are aware of the incident on a flight into the UK on Friday 18 September and we are taking this matter extremely seriously.

“The officer involved has since been removed from operational duties whilst an internal investigation into the circumstances is taking place.”

So the upshot is that the UK’s police have lost another officer.

Will the Home Secretary be admitting this, next time she lies about police numbers?

“Sleepy” Bo Johnson and his cabinet crew need to wake up and get a grip on events as well as keeping guns on their persons all of the time.
