Kexit: for the UK to leave the EU, it seems Kent must leave the UK. Spot the hypocrisy?

The UK’s new border: and the Tories can’t say it’s being imposed on us by anybody but them.

It’s all gone horribly wrong for Boris Johnson’s Brexit.

The government that decided to break international law – and threaten the peace in Northern Ireland – by overruling the Brexit plan to put an internal customs border – within the UK – in the Irish Sea…

… is self-imposing an internal border within the UK – where Kent meets Surrey.

That’s one example of Tory hypocrisy. Let’s see how many more we can find.

Here’s one: the new border means the party that said it would rid the UK of unwanted ‘red tape’ is burying itself under a new mountain of the stuff; Michael Gove is desperately trying to recruit a staggering 50,000 “customs agents” to help business prepare for it.

The measures are deemed necessary to prevent the creation of 7,000-long lorry queues and two-day waits to cross the Channel after the full force of Brexit hits us on January 1, 2021.

So:

Police will patrol the Kent border to turn away lorries without an “access permit”.

Officers will use automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and “other means” to block drivers.

So it seems any trucker without these new travel passports will be arrested in what hauliers say is an attempt to shift blame for the looming disruption onto them (Tory hypocrisy number three).

The social media wits have really gone to town on this one (which is more than permit-less hauliers will be allowed to do) – using the new regulation to ridicule the attitudes of many jingoistic (Brexiteer) Brits:

Singled out for mockery is arch-Brexiteer Nigel Farage:

They point out that the policy move is an insult to Scotland:

Speculation has been rife about the EU’s response:

It is, after all, particularly ironic:

But at least there is an oven-ready excuse for this additional border: Kent already has a Deal.

Sadly any irony will be lost on these Daily Heil reading, BBC Have your say spouting Little Englander Gammons.
WE can see who and what they are but as the saying goes “You can’t educate Pork”.

What about the Isle of Wight? Your maps shows that exited from the UK too!
Will it become the new Cayman Islands style offshore tax haven? Or it will it become the stopping off point for climate refugees just baying to enter the new fascistic Englande to be oppressed then evicted to the now exiled Kent?
Ah ha, Cummings plot is revealed. Kent is to become the PoW camp for all the refugees that are coming here. It’ll be cheaper than housing them or flying back to somewhere.

I’m all for regional autonomy, with devolved democracy and decision making, but this is ridiculous. Wonder what the people of Kent actually think about what they voted for?

As a Kent resident, I love all these jokes about Kent independence. Keep them coming. We need all the ammunition we can get.
I think that it will take a while for the Brexit enthusiasm to wear away though it may well be fading already.
Instead, it will be replaced by a stubborn refusal to admit to having blundered. We are all susceptible to this so I understand that this will take longer.
But we don’t help our case by just refusing to explain the problem, in the way Starmer just does not score all these open goals about Brexit that the Tories are leaving for him.
He seems to want the situation to “mature” when, magically, the Brexiters will realise what a mistake it was.
But it doesn’t work that way. SOMEBODY has to explain what was wrong about the vote and what can be done to put it right.
We have to buckle-up and realise that Brexit arguments are going to go on and on because all the criticisms of Brexit were TRUE. And there will be endless issues and problems and ,yes, daft events worthy of some good jokes.
By avoiding the issue , Starmer is guilty of betraying the interests of working-people in the way he accuses the Party members of.

The saddest thing about this is that there are actually much easier ways of dealing with this if the government bothered to ask an actual expert! There is something called an ERTS (“An ‘Enhanced Remote Transit Shed’ is an approved place situated outside the appointed area of an approved port/airport where non-Community goods may be held until they are declared to customs for an approved treatment or use”.) I’m sure this can and will be adapted for EU goods as well once we leave. Most of the big freight agents already have this facility and simply do the Customs clearances in their own warehouses avoiding delays at the ports. If you can bring goods in from Russia by road in this way I’m sure you can do it with EU goods. And what about ports other than Dover? We get lorries from the continent in Harwich and other places, I wonder if the government realises this? I’d offer my expertise to the government but I’m obviously way over qualified for the job as I have actual knowledge!
