Covid-19: we’re well on course to hit those predicted 50,000 infections a day

In any other country, in any other decade, this would put the seal on Boris Johnson’s career and we would spend the rest of us life using him as a doorstop.

It’s clearly all he’s good for.

After more than six months of contradictory nonsense from him and his cronies – especially ‘Death Minister’ Matt Hancock, the best that can be said of his government is that it has rigged the statistics to make it seem the death figures aren’t as bad as they really are.

Yes, I know what the tweet you just saw says, but you did read my words correctly. It’s the best that can be said of them.

With today’s announcement of an increase of infections by 3,378 on yesterday’s number – to 17,540 – it seems last month’s prediction by Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance will come true and we will soon see 50,000 people being infected every day.

So the logical question is: after all the announcement, counter-announcements, rules, regulations and orders… what went wrong?

The answer seems clear, which is why This Writer is advocating a future career for him in draught-exclusion: Boris Johnson went wrong.

His contradictory posturing and insistence on local lockdowns with a plethora of confusing rules is ample evidence of that.

For example, why is he insisting on cutting off any chance to have fun, while forcing us into work – when all the evidence shows that it is education that has driven Covid infections up and the so-called hospitality industry (pubs, restaurants and so on) has been successful in holding down the disease?

On a side note, the debate about why the virus is multiplying again has led to a new blame game – followed by a wave of (justified) denial:

This idiocy stretches to the government’s Covid-19 contact tracing app:

So if you’ve been in contact with someone who has the disease, you must self-isolate but your housemates don’t have to. That means if, after 14 days, you develop symptoms, then your co-habitees have most likely been spreading it among all their social and work circles for the best part of a fortnight! Insane.

On the subject of official advice…

You only have to look at other countries to see the proof of our government’s failure:

Still, we must remember it isn’t all Johnson’s fault. Take a look at this clip of a Labour MP giving a speech – while the MP behind himย uses her face mask to clean her glasses. What an idiot:

Possibly worse than the government failure has been the insistence of some members of the public on believing that nothing is actually wrong, and Covid-19 is no more than a weird strain of the flu.

It isn’t. There’s plenty of information proving it now:

So here we are.

Covid-19 is out of control – again.

It is because the government failed to control it.

People have been set against each other – and against government advice – because the government has failed to give coherent, let alone good, advice.

And now, going into the winter, we learn that the same government has failed to prepare for it:

Brace yourself.

If you thought the last seven months were bad, the worst is yet to come.
