Claims the ‘Farage Garage’ flooding story was a hoax… turn out to be a hoax

Last Updated: November 13, 2020By Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Farage’s legacy: this land is set to become a parking zone for 17,000 lorries.

We all had a laugh at the name given to a planned lorry park in Kent to accommodate expected customs delays following full Brexit on January 1 next year – right?

(If you’re not aware of this, skip back to this article and enjoy the references to the ‘Farage Garage’ and ‘Jacob Rees Bogs’.)

And yesterday we had a laugh at the following:

Then it seemed someone was having a laugh at us…

But it seems the story is accurate after all:

The story states:

Work on a huge post-Brexit lorry park is running behind schedule after heavy rain forced contractors to down tools.

The Department for Transport says it had to suspend construction of the 1,700-space facility in Ashford earlier this week “to manage surface water levels”.

Whether the site really does flood four times a year is not made clear, although it has clearly managed it once since construction started.

Hahhah – can’t make up the stupidity being enacted by the stupid fascist tories! I’ve no doubt this infamous car park will flood more than 4 times a year! Still never mind the hauliers can pay to get their lorries out of the mud! Fascist tory government boys will all chime ‘not our problem guv we just enacted what the stupid peasants wanted us to do and they voted us into power!’

We should be thankful they didn’t allow houses to be built here, construction companies are constantly applying for planning permission to build houses on land which is subject to flooding. In some (Tory) areas it is granted and then the people who move in find out too late.

Should really do some research before publishing fake news.
That picture is of fields south of Ashford, near Fairview Drive.
The lorry park is south east of Ashford, near Sevington church.
The Environment Agency Flood Risk map shows that the pictured area has a high risk of flooding from the Stour River, but the lorry park site at Sevington is on higher ground that doesn’t have the risk.

It isn’t fake news. I’ve updated the story to accommodate your claim, though – and to point people to the news story that started this.

I would suggest that, as the story does not include an aerial image of the flooding, the image that was used was intended to be for illustrative purposes only. I think whoever put it out into the Twittersphere should have made that clear.

As for the Environment Agency’s Flood Risk map… Perhaps it needs to be updated?
