Libel case: Rachel Riley has had one lucky escape. Help make sure she doesn’t have another

The difference between comedy and tragedy is timing, it has been said.

A little over a year ago, a High Court judge mistakenly struck out all of my defences against Rachel Riley’s false libel accusation. Riley immediately released a statement calling me a liar:

It said: “Mike Sivier, a pro-Corbyn blogger… has repeatedly made false allegations about me over the past two years.

“Repeating his lies, Sivier has crowdfunded over £100k towards his legal case, with comments showing his donors range from hardcore antisemites citing ‘lying malicious Zionists,’ to vulnerable people with little income to spare, who have all donated money based on false claims.

“I hope this case serves to remind whoever needs reminding, that you cannot lie and defame people without consequence.”

Of course, I didn’t lie.

I had examined the available evidence and reached a reasonable conclusion, which I then published because it was in the public interest for people to know.

I mention this now because – as those of you who follow my Vox Political website will know – I recently published an article in which I suggested – on the basis of the available evidence – that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to put his nuclear arsenal on standby may be because of unwise comments by the UK’s foreign secretary, Liz Truss.  Putin himself confirmed this the very next day.

So I think I’m safe in saying that my analysis of available evidence is, in general, trustworthy.

Getting back to Riley, the Court of Appeal reversed the High Court’s decision in respect of one of my defences, and it seems highly likely that I will win the case if – if – it finally goes to court.

The law of libel goes both ways, and if the case had been heard – and concluded in my favour – before January 20 this year, then I would have seriously considered taking action against this television presenter for false claims about me.

So she has had a lucky escape. And she may still have another.

I can only defend myself in court if I have the money to do it. People who have donated to the CrowdJustice fund – people like you – have made it possible for me to get as far as I have already; without you, Riley would have been able to buy a ruling against me, nearly three years ago.

As you can see from her statement, she thinks you are hardcore anti-Semites and vulnerable people who have been fooled into parting with your cash. You may have an opinion of your own about that!

Because of sideshows like Riley’s “strike-out” application, I still don’t have enough to ensure that I have my day in court.

Given what she said about me – not to mention what she said about you – I hope you’re as keen as I am to make sure that I can see this through to the end.

So, please, do one or several (or even all) of the following:

Consider making a donation yourself, via the CrowdJustice page.

Email your friends, asking them to pledge to the CrowdJustice site.

Post a link to Facebook, asking readers to pledge.

On Twitter, tweet in support, quoting the address of the appeal.

I have no idea when the court will list this case to be heard, meaning I don’t know how much time is left to raise the necessary funds.

Riley has insulted you as much as she has dragged my own reputation through the dirt.

And she will go on doing this until she is given a reason to stop.

Please help me make her stop.

Have YOU donated to my crowdfunding appeal, raising funds to fight false libel claims by TV celebrities who should know better? These court cases cost a lot of money so every penny will help ensure that wealth doesn’t beat justice.
