Russia and Ukraine may be close to agreement on key peace issues

Meeting: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will have to meet to cement a peace deal. They aren’t at that point yet – but is it far away?

Russia and Ukraine are coming close to a peace deal on four key issues, according to Turkey, which is acting as a facilitator for talks.

Russia’s demand for Ukraine to renounce ambitions to join NATO, demilitarisation, what Russia has referred to as “de-nazification”, and the protection of the Russian language in Ukraine are the issues on which the two sides are edging towards agreement.

But it’s being said that a deal can only be clinched after a face-to-face meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

This can’t happen until the two nations see eye-to-eye on the status of disputed regions: the Donbas (Donetsk and Luhansk) and the Crimea. And that hasn’t happened yet.

But it may happen soon.

There is hope for peace – even amid the reports of deaths, destruction and atrocities.
