Russia-Ukraine peace talks shift to sovereignty and territorial integrity

Not talking yet: but a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war between those two countries is edging closer.

Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia will shift onto subjects of “sovereignty and territorial integrity” after apparent agreement was reached over membership of Nato and nuclear weapons.

It seems the talks will focus on the future of the breakaway Donbas region and ownership of the Crimean peninsula.

According to Sky News,

Russia has claimed its main focus has shifted to taking control of the eastern Donbas region, an apparent pullback from its initial more ambitious goals, but one which is raising fears of a divided Ukraine.

This Writer still cannot see Ukraine accepting that in any way. A split Donbas region won’t solve the problems there.

A better alternative would be to hold referenda among the people there, allowing them to decide whether to be Ukrainian, Russian or independent.

And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy isn’t averse to referenda; he has signalled willingness to ask his people whether to declare neutrality and stay out of Nato, in a significant step forward towards peace.

  1. I don’t think that what happens next depends on what the Ukrainians may want, it never did. https://consortiumnews.com/2022/03/27/can-russia-escape-the-us-trap/

Donbas needs to go independent, as Kalingrad did in the past and was accepted.

Then there is no reason for any war.

Beyond the civilians caught up in the war, we need to to deal with the cost of living crisis made worse by sanctions.

That is a war by our own governments against us the people of UK, Europe and America.

Western Ukraine will never allow eastern Ukraine to have a referendum because it knows the vote would be in favour of Russia. The Donbas has had eight long years of the Russophobic neo nazis shelling them day and night to know that nothing will ever change for them unless Russia is there to protect them. 2 million Eastern Ukrainians fled over Russia’s border and doubtless will not want to return because Western Ukraine violated the Minsk agreements a day after they were agreed – both times. The west did not want to see the suffering of the Donbas then and it still does not acknowledge it now so anything short of a hard border, at least for the Donbas, will be worthless. As Independant NovaRussya, they would still be warring till the end of this century because Russia will not be there to stop the neo nazis from ethnically cleansing them.
The Right to Self Determination does not apply to Russian speaking peoples(presumably they are not human enough) only those peoples the US and EU has a use for qualify for that right.
Sorry if I sound cynical but I know the Neo Nazis of UK2, Azov, Svoboda and the many other units display their Swastikas, their SS Waffen insignia and their chants of “kill the Russians, kill the Jews” to be persuaded any differently.
