Keir Starmer’s offer to quit if he’s fined for breach of lockdown: overconfidence?

Keir Starmer: he has absolutely no intention of quitting as Labour Party leader – but that’s exactly what he has promised to do if the police find him to have broken lockdown rules. What if his bluff is called?

It’s a big show of bravado but it could backfire badly for the most right-wing leader Labour has ever had.

Keir Starmer has said he will stand down as Labour Party leader if the police find him guilty of breaching Covid-19 lockdown rules in April 2021.

This Site has discussed the circumstances and the various claims here and here.

Culture Minister Chris Philp has accused the Labour leader trying to “pressure the police into clearing him”, which he called “deeply inappropriate”.

But that is not Starmer’s problem.

He has painted himself into a corner.

What are voters going to do if the police don’t clear him – and he decides not to quit after all?

You can be sure that he has absolutely no intention of going, no matter what happens.

Starmer has consistently stated “no rules were broken”. However, if he does receive an FPN, he’ll resign. He’s a barrister. If he is genuinely convinced that he did not break the law, the appropriate action is to appeal against the FPN.
Today’s little charade was grandstanding. That was clearly exposed by Beth Rigby from Sky News, who was unable to get an answer when she asked Starmer what he’d do if the police found that he had actually broken the law, but did not issue an FPN.
The Labour Party is an embarrassment to all of us on the Left.

He wont go that is for certain…he is banking on the first decision the Police found…Starmer knows the law…this statement of his, I think is bravado..and in a way he is calling Johnson out…If this should backfire on him…then he only has himself to blame..

As he worked with the police for years, he has probably been informed he will not be charged

I do not believe or trust the zionist bribed tory posing as Labour leader. He has lied and deceived his way to becoming leader of the labour party, he has broken every pledge labour made, and he and his nest of traitors perilously lost the election, and let the tories continue with their disgusting, and inhuman policies, and their lies, theft, fraud, corruption and social murder!

We all know it won’t happen, he knows and we know that Durham police don’t issue fines? It’s the talk of Twitter today!

I’ve just contacted Durham Police press office to find out whether that is true. Will report the answer when I have it.
