Libel case over Panorama’s ‘Is Labour Antisemitic’ to be heard in November

Skwawkbox is reporting that the man behind the now-infamous BBC Panorama documentary Is Labour Antisemitic is taking a critic to court for libel on November 7.

John Ware, whose programme featured among its ‘whistleblowers’ at least two former staff accused in a leaked Labour report of hindering Corbyn’s efforts to combat antisemitism, and a woman recorded by an undercover Al Jazeera reporter discussing beating up black left-wing Jewish activist Jackie Walker, will be represented by William Bennett QC instructed by Mark Lewis of Patron Law.

Lewis and Patron Law are the same solicitor and company employed by Rachel Riley to sue This Writer.

They will be trying to prove that Press Gang editor Paddy French’s description of the documentary as “rogue journalism” is libellous.

French will be defended by Hugh Tomlinson, QC and Darryl Hutcheon, instructed by Bindmans solicitors.

According to Skwawkbox, he has raised nearly £90,000 from more than a thousand backers, including Pink Floyd musician Roger Waters, who told French “your fight is fundamentally important”. French’s crowdfunder can be found here.

The lawsuit – over a £50,000 claim – is likely to cost £750,000 in total, we’re told.

In a statement, French said:

This case provides a unique opportunity for the issue of antisemitism in Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party to be explored in a forensic setting. Was I (and Labour) right to criticise the July 2019 Panorama programme Is Labour Anti-Semitic? as a biased piece of rogue journalism?

Or was the BBC (and John Ware) right when they said the broadcast was made in compliance with the Corporation’s Editorial Guidelines, rejecting accusations of bias or dishonesty?”

My own court case – the action by Rachel Riley against me – will take place considerably earlier, in the week starting on July 18.

I have crowdfunded more than £216,000 to cover its costs and am within £3,000 of being able to fund my legal team through the trial. If I win, it may be a blow to the credibility of Ware’s legal team in advance of the case against French.

To help me do so, here are a few simple instructions:

My personal opinion is that both of these cases have been attempts to silence criticism of a false narrative – the claim that Labour was anti-Semitic under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership – by abusing the civil justice system.

Certainly in my case, it seems to me that the claim was made in the belief that I would not be able to afford to defend it and that Riley would therefore be able to buy a ruling in her favour.

That’s no justice at all and I’m both glad and grateful that I have been able to fend her off for nearly three and a half years so far.

I know times are hard for everyone but let’s try to make sure that both I and Paddy French meet our funding goals so we can prove our cases in court.
