The Tories said they were taking power back. The cost-of-living crisis proves the opposite

Last Updated: August 9, 2022By Tags: , , , , , , , ,

All smiles: Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss can afford to grin like idiots because the huge pay rises they have voted to give themselves mean they can afford the increased cost of living. Of course, they haven’t raised your income along the same lines, and won’t lift a finger to help you, even though it is their decisions that have dumped you in the mire.

This is just a thought:

The Conservatives told us that leaving the European Union would bring huge amounts of money back into the UK, rather than being given to EU projects abroad.

They told us this cash could then be used to improve the quality of life here in the UK – and not just by increasing NHS funding in line with the slogan on the side of a campaign bus, either.

They also told us that their other policies were bringing choice into our lives that would make it easier for us to fit our spending to our means.

And they told us that it all meant the UK would be able to chart its own course in the world, free of the influence of foreign powers.

But here we are today, being absolutely buffeted by rocketing inflation that has been caused by the energy price rise and by the consequences of Brexit!

The Tories – whoever they are – will want to tell us that these pitfalls were unavoidable; unforeseeable. But that is simply nonsense.

Instead of making it possible for us to live within our means, they have restricted our choices to the point where the only options are far too expensive for us to manage.

Brexit restricted us. The cost of leaving the European Union has skyrocketed and now stands at £9 billion a year – or £1 million every hour. The lost trading opportunities will plague us for decades to come.

Years of failure to invest in green energy (because fossil fuels were making huge profits for Tory donors) restricted us. We were left at the mercy of fossil fuel suppliers – like Russia – who were able to close their pipelines and force us to pay more.

And now, the Tories are telling us they can’t be bothered to help us out of the hole they dug for us.

How many (more) of us are they going to bury in it, next winter?

Leaving the EU was only ever about being able to restrict our rights and make money for the rich.

I agree. My point is that we were told it was about empowering us, and I wanted readers to see how so many people were deceived.
