Draconian? Suella Braverman’s new attack on migrant crossings is nonsense

Last Updated: March 7, 2023By Tags: , , , , , , ,

It sounds big, bold and nasty:

But Suella Braverman’s claim that she will send Channel migrants who make it to the UK back to their country of origin, with any future bid for citizenship to be refused, is nothing new, according to Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

She said it was the same policy put forward a year ago, by a previous Home Secretary – that didn’t work.

Only a few people were sent back and the rest were left in hotels to await “processing”. Cooper said she expected nothing better this time.

The standout comment for me was that, when this latest silliness fails, Braverman and her cronies will be casting about for someone else to blame.

Isn’t that the whole point of the so-called migrant crisis – to point the finger at someone who doesn’t have any power or ability to protect themselves, in order to divert attention away from the people who are really responsible for our problems?

Isn’t this what’s really going on?

Of course the migrant issue was caused by Boris Johnson when he failed to negotiate a ‘returns agreement’ with the European Union during Brexit negotiations. The Tories never mention that!

So let’s be clear:

Braverman’s new policy is the old policy warmed up – to blame Channel migrants for old Tory blunders, and to distract us from the blunders they are making now.
