How is Boris Johnson going to save the planet when he can’t even talk sense to kids?

Boris Johnson as he must have appeared to those kids: that’s right – This Site doesn’t have any pictures of him near children (thankfully).

On the eve of the crucial COP26 climate summit, Boris Johnson held a press conference about it for young children – and showed that they are more mature than he is.

This creates problems for the world, because he and his UK Tory government are hosting the event.

At one point, he actually suggested that we should “redress the balance” (what balance?) by feeding human beings to animals:

The tweet below sums up the general feeling about his performance:

With his government in charge of COP26, we’ll all be out of our depth soon enough – as the sea level rises.

Perhaps Johnson is hoping the sewage-laden tide will cover his shame.

Jacob Rees Mogg attacks Unicef for feeding the children he has forced to starvation

Jacob Rees-Mogg, making a gesture that well defines him. He’s currently all upset that the failings of his Tory government have prompted Unicef to come to the UK and feed our starving children. It’s a job that the Tory government should have done but couldn’t be bothered to.

Where to start with the latest atrocity from this atrocious Tory?

Yesterday we learned that UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund that provides humanitarian and developmental aid to children across the world, is having to help feed hungry kids in the UK for the first time since it was formed in 1946.

The non-political UN charity is providing £25,000 to two charities – Food School Matters and Food Power – who will partner with Premier Foods and local authorities to help provide breakfast boxes to 1,800 children in south London.

It seems clear that this move has been prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the weak response of Boris Johnson’s Tory government.

UNICEF UK spokesperson Anna Kettley told Sky News, “This is an unprecedented situation which requires everyone to roll their sleeves up, step in and support children and families that need it most at this time.”

This is happening because Johnson’s government told millions of parents they had to stop working because of the virus. In doing so, the Tories took responsibility for the well-being of those families – and threw it away.

Instead of ensuring that parents were fully compensated for their lost wages, Rishi Sunak devised a series of schemes that provided only a fraction of what was needed – to only a fraction of the people who needed them.

Now, at what is traditionally the hardest part of the year for many people, the UN’s children’s charity has had to announce that it is stepping in to help.

And how did the Tories greet this timely aid – which will help them as well as the families who will benefit directly, by preventing a human disaster driven by poverty in the world’s fifth-wealthiest country?

Jacob Rees-Mogg condemned it as a political stunt.

He said,

“It’s a real scandal that Unicef should be playing politics in this way when it is meant to be looking after people in the poorest and most deprived countries in the world, where people are starving, where there are famines and there are civil wars – and they make cheap political points of this kind, giving, I think, £25,000 to one council.

“It is a political stunt of the lowest order.”

He added: “Unicef should be ashamed of itself.”

Perhaps I should spend the rest of this article discussing the ingratitude of spoilt little rich boys.

Rees-Mogg has never suffered poverty and does not understand what it is like to be forced into starvation by the actions of others who have power over him. It is unlikely he ever will.

It does not follow that this means he cannot understand the responsibility of those who have power over other people to ensure that they do not harm those others in the exercise of that power. Other rich people have understood this necessity and acted on it.

It just seems that Rees-Mogg – and many others in the Johnson government – aren’t bright enough to understand that they do have a duty of care for people if they’re going to deny them the chance to earn a living for themselves.

This failure of intelligence has extended to the point that they cannot even understand – or at least, that’s what their behaviour suggests – that by stepping in, Unicef is helping the Tories out of a hole that they dug for themselves.

If children were to starve to death over this Christmas period, Rees-Mogg and his brethren would be blamed. And the public may be notoriously fickle but they don’t forget when a politician’s choices kill their families.

So he should be grateful.

Perhaps he just doesn’t like that fact that, rich as he is personally, he needed help from a charity.

Don’t let them get away with it: next time Tories mention £63m fund to feed kids, remind them it has been SPENT

Money, money, money: and none of it is for hungry children. The £63m fund mentioned so often by Boris Johnson and others was not for that purpose and was all spent before they even started talking it up.

You know that £63 million fund Conservative ministers like Robert Jenrick, Nadhim Zahawi, Matt Hancock and Boris Johnson keep saying is available to feed poor children over school holidays?

It was all spent weeks ago.

It came to only a few hundred thousand pounds per council.

When they Tories provided it in July, it was with a proviso that the money had to be spent within 12 weeks.

And it wasn’t specifically for feeding hungry children anyway.

Here’s Peter Stefanovic:

Don’t let them get away with it.

Next time a Tory minister turns up on the media peddling this lie, complain.

Complain to that minister personally, and also to the media outlet, be it the BBC, Sky News or some local radio station operating out of a Portakabin.

Let’s expose these liars and child-starvers for what they are.

Note: This Site has been reminded that a handful of Conservatives voted in favour of feeding children during the school holidays, in rebellion against their party’s line that called for your kids to starve. Obviously they should not be targeted during protests. The are:

Caroline Ansell( quit Government post)
Robert Halfon
Jason McCartney
Anne Marie Morris
Holly Mumby-Croft

No doubt there are perfectly good reasons to criticise the above-named people as well – they are Tories, after all – but this isn’t one of them.

Rashford strikes again – belittling ignorant Tory MP over ‘feeding children’ tweet

Marcus Rashford: he is campaigning to end food poverty and the Tory government has said it will listen to his recommendations. But one Tory MP seems to be shooting wild.

Footballer and food poverty campaigner Marcus Rashford scored against Kevin Hollinrake after the Tory MP shot his mouth off about parental responsibility to feed children.

Hollinrake responded to a tweet from a member of the public asking why it was necessary for Marcus Rashford to make a stand for hungry children in society.

This person asked: Isn’t that the job of our MPs?

Hollinrake responded: “Where they can, it’s a parents job to feed their children.”

But Rashford had noticed the exchange and responded to it – politely, but firmly:

“I would urge you to talk to families before tweeting. To this day I haven’t met one parent who hasn’t wanted or felt the responsibility to feed their children…”

To This Writer’s way of thinking, he was too easy on the Tory twit.

The point is that, in many cases, it is Tory policy that has made it impossible for parents to feed their children; they have cut real-terms wages and benefits to the point where it is impossible to afford the rent, other bills, and food as well.

Hollinrake should have known that, but chose to express his ignorance instead.

The amazing thing is that the people of Thirsk and Malton thought he was fit to represent them.

But from now on – at least – he is a marked man.

Why are Tory MPs manufacturing outrage that parents want the government to feed their children? They expect the same!

Ben Bradley: you’d think he would learn to keep his mouth shut after he called for poor people to be forced to have vasectomies and libelled Jeremy Corbyn.

How many MPs are claiming expenses to cover the costs of having children?

This Writer doesn’t have the current figures but in 2013 I know 148 of them were claiming extra money to rent larger homes and cover the cost of youngsters’ travel.

According to the Daily Mirror at the time, MPs had claimed around £140,000 for kids’ travel between 2010 and 2013.

And Parliamentary standards watchdog IPSA was allowing MPs to increase the maximum allowance they could claim by £2,425 for each child they said lived with them.

Some MPs – including nine cabinet ministers – were claiming more than £10,000 extra.

I mention this because certain Conservative MPs have been kicking up a fuss about the comparatively small amount – per person – that will go towards extending free school meals throughout the summer holidays in England.

Tory Sally-Ann Hart seemed to think it was wrong for parents to “expect” the government to feed their children, even though she is part of a government whose members expect their own childcare to be paid by the public and not from their own pay packets.

I find this part particularly interesting:

[She] said MPs must “not shy away” from the issue that some parents “just do not or cannot prioritise their children’s needs over their own”.

And she said the Government must “turbocharge” its efforts to understand why such neglect happens.

Perhaps Ms Hart should turn to some of her neighbours on the Green Benches and ask them – just as a starting-point?

As responses from the public go, I don’t think you’ll find one better than this:

Another Tory – Ben Bradley – demanded safeguards to ensure that parents could not use free school meal vouchers to obtain alcohol and cigarettes.

Fine words from a man who belongs to an institution where people like himself frequently run up huge bills at the various Parliamentary bars, on expenses.

In fact, some of them have even refused to pay altogether.

But Ms Hart and Mr Bradley – who is also on record as calling for poor men to be vasectomised, and had to apologise publicly and pay money to charity after libelling Jeremy Corbyn – don’t seem to be aware of these facts.

Perhaps they should examine behaviour closer to their own homes, rather than accusing people before they’ve even had a chance to do anything wrong.

Universal Credit nightmares: Man unable to feed daughter after unwarned benefit freeze

Is this conscious cruelty or accidental agony? And which is worse?

It seems the Department for Work and Pensions decided that Cezar Zanin, of Bristol, had not provided enough information about a childcare provider – so it cut off his Universal Credit without warning.

He was left unable to feed his daughter Laura, and was forced to borrow money from friends.

(Lucky man. If you want to know what happens to people in this situation who don’t have generous friends, it’s obvious: they die.)

Here’s the real issue, though: Mr Zanin wasn’t sanctioned. He wasn’t given any reason for it. The payments simply stopped.

And it took him a while to realise his payments had ended, meaning increased financial difficulty.

One has to ask what these DWP employees were thinking. Mr Zanin works part-time for the NHS, so he’s doing his bit to improve his situation – but he and his daughter are in temporary accommodation. There’s a clear need.

The DWP itself said payments were suspended because Mr Zanin submitted two childcare receipts for the same month and the department had to check that the payments were genuine.

Why couldn’t anybody tell him that?

So we come back to the question at the top:

Is this conscious cruelty or accidental agony? And which is worse?

Benefit delays have forced more people to steal in order to feed their families

Stories of benefit claimants being forced to steal to feed their families are starting to come in thick and fast – just as This Site predicted long ago.

And what’s to blame? Of course – Universal Credit.

In this instance, it seems Shane Norman and Stacey Lawson used their child’s push chair to conceal £21 worth of food they took from Iceland in Lincoln.

They had been pushed onto Universal Credit recently and – inevitably – their first payment had been delayed (in order to push them deep into poverty, surely, although the Tory government always denies this).

The couple had used up all the visits to the food bank that they were allowed and believed they had no alternative.

According to Lincolnshire Live, Mark McNeil spoke for the couple in court. He said: “The couple were caught in a benefits gap as it was changing over to universal credit.

“They were left for weeks without any income. This was an act of desperation.

“Had the benefits been paid on time as they should be, they would have not found themselves in this situation.”

His words are clear. The Conservative government drove this couple to crime by its own improper behaviour. It pushed them to desperation – as it has pushed many others and will push many more.

Working parents are starving for a week at a time because they aren’t paid enough to feed their children

Food bank: Parents who have jobs are being forced to request food packages because their greedy employers don’t pay them enough.

It breaks This Writer’s heart to learn about the suffering of parents in my home town of Bristol, although I’m sure many other towns and cities in the UK are going through the same.

The Bristol Post is reporting that parents in that city have gone without food for up to a week at a time, faced with the agonising choice of either feeding themselves or their kids.

Some of these people could be friends or relatives of mine – or be related to people I know.

They have been arriving at food banks – dizzy due to lack of food and so desperate for nutrition that they won’t wait to get home with food packages, but will eat them on the spot.

Now here’s the real kick in the teeth: Most of these parents are in work but due to the spiralling cost of living, they can’t keep up with their bills.

Families whose children are normally offered school meals struggle during the holidays, especially as they have to finance heating costs.

Apparently this means the number of people visiting north Bristol’s food banks alone can triple.

I write this on the day after the pay of the UK’s top earners passed the amount that most people earn in an entire year.

Top bosses take home 133 times the average wage.

Is it any wonder the people who actually create the profits these “fat cats” guzzle are suffering?

They are starving in order to subsidise a rich person’s greed.

EXTRA: This is self-explanatory, I think – and the result of Conservative neoliberal policies that tell you the wealth of the obscenely rich will “trickle down” to the rest of us.

It doesn’t. The greed of rich employers knows no bounds. Given the opportunity to keep the money that comes to them, that’s what they have done.
