Matt Hancock donates just 3% of I’m A Celebrity fee to dyslexia campaign

Matt Hancock: cross-eyed and shameless.

Remember when it was announced that Matt Hancock was going into the jungle on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here and he said he was doing it to raise awareness of his dyslexia campaign.

You might have expected him to donate his £320,000 fee – or at least a majority of it – to such a campaign. He doesn’t need it on his large MP’s salary, after all – and he’s also been given a £48,000 advance for his Pandemic Diaries book (to be found in the fiction section of bookstores, perhaps).

And how much has he actually donated?

Just £10,000 – and that has been split between St Peter’s Hospice and the British Dyslexia Association.

Matt Hancock has so far donated just 3% of the fee he was paid for appearing on I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! to charity, it has been revealed.

The former health secretary received £320,000 for his stint on the reality show, of which £10,000 was donated to charity, according to the register of MPs’ financial interests.

A spokesperson for Hancock told BBC News: “As well as raising the profile of his dyslexia campaign in front of 11 million viewers, Matt’s donated £10,000 to St Nicholas hospice in Suffolk and the British Dyslexia Association.”

Let this be a lesson to ITV: Next time a politician says they’re doing a reality show to help a cause, have the extent of that help written into their contract.

Matt Hancock’s trials won’t end with I’m A Celebrity

It seems Matt Hancock’s bid to be seen as a real person by going on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here may backfire on him as soon as he gets home.

Residents in his Parliamentary constituency aren’t happy:

And Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone reckons she has received dozens of complaints about Hancock’s decision to go to the jungle.

She said she couldn’t investigate because appearing on the show doesn’t breach the Commons Code of Conduct.

But she added: “It raises really important questions about members’ proper activities while they’re supposed to be fulfilling their parliamentary duties and representing their constituents.

“One member of the public contrasted the dignity of veterans on Remembrance Sunday with a former secretary of state… waiting for a buffet of animal genitalia and they wondered what had happened to the dignity of public office.”

So it seems he’ll come back from the rainforest into a storm.

Matt Hancock comes under more mockery – from Russell Howard

Yes, we’ve had a lot of commentary about Matt Hancock going into the jungle for I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, but most of it focuses on the serious issues people have with a former government minister whose decisions harmed many thousands.

Here comes Russell Howard and – yes – there’s a fair amount of indignation here. But there’s also a huge amount of straightforward ridicule and outright hilarity:

I know. You needed that. Right?

Matt Hancock has arrived in the jungle. How do you think he’s doing?

Looking shifty: Matt Hancock has fled the scandals of the UK for the bushtucker trials of Australia. Out of the frying pan, into the fire?

After all the controversy about him going, former Health Secretary Matt Hancock has arrived in the Australian jungle to take part in I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

Before he appeared on screen, we were told he had a good reason for wanting to go – but few of us had any interest in accepting it:

Hancock is remembered as the ‘Death’ Secretary, whose failures as a government health minister led to the unnecessary deaths of many thousands of people.

This was hammered home to viewers when fellow participant Boy George said his mother had been seriously affected by Covid and that, when he had seen Hancock walk into camp, he had seriously considered walking out.

And he wasn’t the only campmate to have strong feelings. You can see and hear him recounting his story at the end of the following clip – after the others all air their grievances:

Here’s a little clip studying the scandals Hancock has left behind – including the scandal of him going in:

As I write these words, we’re about to see him do a bushtucker trial, after being voted into it by the viewing public. I have a feeling we’re going to see him do many more.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the eating trial. Kangaroo testicles and alligator anus, anyone?

Corbyn-May Brexit TV debate is on – but why must it clash with the final of I’m a Celebrity?

Theresa May or Holly Willoughby: Who would YOU rather watch on a Sunday evening?

Jeremy Corbyn has agreed to debate Brexit with Theresa May – and the preferred date appears to set them both against Holly Willoughby and Dec Donnelly, as they crown the new King or Queen of the Jungle.

Who will win? The answer is obvious.

The final of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here will trounce a dull political debate – especially one that has already been made, repeated and repeated again in the House of Commons.

Mr Corbyn won every time – but we don’t know who’ll take the jungle crown so that’s where viewers will go – on December 9.

The “meaningful vote” on whether Parliament will back Mrs May’s Brexit deal will take place two days later, on December 11.

But we already know the result.

By agreeing to a debate scheduled opposite on of the biggest audience-grabbers of the TV year, Mrs May is admitting defeat.

She won’t persuade the millions of viewers who will be watching the biggest reality TV show in the UK – so she won’t persuade the MPs who are threatening to end her premiership.

The public will vote one lucky celebrity up on Sunday – and then on Tuesday the Commons will vote Mrs May down.
